The current beta has memory leaks.
I've seen this behavior too.
No "cheat" is necessary. Something changed with the FOW in .295 that impacted the area visible at the start of the game. Before Beta 1G this wasn't an issue. There was a comment from one of the Devs that they did, indeed change how FOW is handledl; to accomodate multi-player. As to how big the visible area should be around a sovreign at the start of the game... I think 2 hexes / squares would be perfect. Right now there are things that are right
I think this is the one of the bigger annoyances with .295. It's especially annoying when you have to spend the first 6 - 10 moves of a game, before you can found a city, just to uncover the resources that surround the sovereign at the beginning of the game.
I've had this happen with monsters too. The graphic for the troll or spider will be visible on the screen but it will fade in and out of visibility. I can move a unit onto the space supposedly occupied by the enemy unit and nothing happens.
Everything described dovetails with what I experienced. Once I went over some magic number of cities the upkeep skyrocketed. Perhaps this is the Elemental version of the Civ 3 concept of corruption. [e digicons]:D[/e]
I'm finding .295 a LOT more stable than .291. I was able to complete a game with only 3 CTD. The really nice thing was that I was able to continue from autosaved games. Towards the end of the game I noticed that my treasury was negative to the tune more than 20,000 gold but I have no idea why. I had founded three cities of my own and they all seemed to be adding steadily to my treasury. At that point I attacked my neighbor and took four of his cities. Tha
This Thursday.
On restoring a saved game the entire explored map, outside of the area of control of a city, comes up as blank territory. I had to re-explore before things would show up again.
Mines are now showing up but I think the "random" aspect of researching technology could stand a little tweaking. I just played a partial game (CTD) where I had researched level 20 in Civilization tech but never discovered housing.
Nothing much going on just a CTD when pressing the turn button. I tried to post the debug.err and dump file to FogBugz but it's requiring a login before it will let me do that. It didn't require that the last time I tried. I used the link on the "READ BEFORE POSTING" post: http://fogbugz.stardock.com/default.asp?pg=pgPublicEdit
There's nothing I've found that takes the fun out of a game more than arbitrary restrictions of the type being discussed. The earlier example of the Civ 3 concept of corruption is a stellar example. That single "feature" was the reason why I stopped playing Civ 3. I've nothing against reasoned and logical, in terms of the game world, limits but a larger empire will be able to out research a smaller empire. It's that simple. The trick to good game design is to
I'm still getting crashes but, overall, stability has increased for me with beta 1D.
It's been stated since the beginning of the beta that DirectX 9.0c support would be needed at minimum.
I'm not a fan of failure chances either, for the same reasons mentioned by DivineWrath. Wouldn't it be better to see how the system is implemented, with a chance to see how it works in practice, before proposing alternatives?
One game that did this sort of mechanic reasonably well was Sword of the Stars.
I saved the game after about 30 turns. I'll try to resume it this evening.
As of last nights update I can now run the game in a Windows 7 32-bit environment without having the game crash at the splash screen. I no longer have to run the game as an administrator for the game to load. Progress!
I think this is the same issue reported here: link
If the Temple of Apshai mod works out I'm curious as to whether anyone would try to do a Tomb of Horrors mod.
I did create a city and I know that that costs 5 essence but if the level screen is reporting "overall essence accumulated" while everything else is reporting "available essence" I think that's misleading and I don't see the purpose.
After leveling up my Sovreign I noticed that, consistently, upon leveling up the leader received an essence bump of 5 points. All well and good. The normal screen, and main map icon, reports 5 essence less than the "level up" screen. It wasn't just a one turn delay either. After multiple level gains the "level up" screen consistently has the correct total while the normal screen reports 5 essence points fewer than it should.
It looks like running as Admin isn't the only thing going on. While I was able to get two games started while running as Admin a third and fourth game crashed at the splash screen.
What worked for me, under Windows 7, is to run the game as an admin rather than a normal user. If I do that I don't get the CTD at the splash screen.
