Okay, let me see if I get this one. If you play the original store bought/download of the DA game, there are a 'couple' of 'issues' which should have been 'fixed' with the first beta update. Now that update caused a couple of glitches requiring the 2nd beta... then there was an immediate beta 3, which was highly touted as being the update to grab because it addressed issues from the first two beta's. Then, with whiplash inducing speed beta 4 poppe

What is the point in overclocking, with these modern Processors? Overclocking Voids the Warranty(ies) of the parts involved. So does a third party heatsink/fan. I am dualbooting XP Pro 32 bit and XP Pro 64 bit. 32 bit for things that won't run in XP 64, like my 2 HP printers (DeskJet 3820 and LaserJet 1018). Get the best you can afford.

I am 51, disabled, somewhat reclusive, never married, never had a significant other, only 2 friends (strict requirements for Friendship: IF I can trust you with my life, you are a friend). I liked the old SSI AD&D Gold Box games, since they are Turn Based (as they should be). I also fell in love with Fallout and Fallout 2. Only recently learned of GC2 and it got my interest.

When optimizing the ship meshes, did you remember to Weld the polygons? Reversed Normals or visa versa? Unwanted Displacement? I have those odd planes and rods with the ships. Xp Pro 64, Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (2 x 1 MB L2 cache), 4 GB DDR2 667, MSI NX7600GS 256 MB dual DVI, Acer X222W widescreen (at native resolution). DA is running in a window at 1600 x 900 (32 bit).

I don't overclock, cause I can't afford any fatal mistakes. So I have to go with what I can afford. I recently sold some of my old stuff that has been in the attic for decades, for $700. This gave me the hardware upgrade budget for this machine. When upgrading hardware, I use everything I can from the old, which help reduce costs. I already have on hand an AM2 mobo and Athlon X2 3800+ 65 Watt Retail. I finally decided to go with a better processor and keep the 3800+ for a backup. Curren

Perhaps you now understand why a growing number of people call Vista 'ME2'. Beware of the Programs area of Vista (aka program files), cause any attempt to update programs will be seen by Vista as malware, and Vista will trash all files on all partitions. Everything under Programs is Protected Content. I feel your pain, Cari. Programming can be a nightmare at times.

Thank you for your input, Mumblefratz. I am only providing a Concept, in which most of the details would have to worked out by the Dev Team. presuming it gets that far. It does not need to be limited to 2 galaxies, and this is where I think 64 bit enters the picture (RAM). The other galaxies don't have to be the same size as the player's home galaxy. Intergalactic opens up a very large number of possibilities.

It may require 4 or 8 cores. Depends on how the concept is implemented. You begin the game in your Home Galaxy, and do not have access to others, until you become: 1: Aware of life in another galaxy and/or 2: Have the required Techs to travel Intergalactic Then you have access to a second galaxy. When in 2 or more galaxies, the player has to switch between them, since you can only do things in 1 galaxy at a time, as in getting things set for the next turn. Once

Nice review, Solver! Civ and Alpha Centauri focus on a single planet, while the Galciv series focuses on a single galaxy, with many planets. Civ has been around since the old MSDOS days, and is a mature platform as a result. I am also a casual player, and it is nice seeing an objective review.

Best and worst games, other than buggy, are from the likes and dislikes of the players. I am an old time AD&D player and Dungeon Master, and really loved the SSI Gold Box Forgotten Realms games, since they were faithful to the Turn Based game. Dungeon Hack is the only FPS AD&D game that I like. So these go down as no. 1 and 2. 1: SSI Forgotten Realms Gold Box games 2: Dungeon Hack I got Fallout 1 bundled with Baldur's Gate, and really got hooked on it, then got Fal

Expanding on the concept of Galactic Civilizations, is the idea of Intergalactic Civilizations . You start off in your Home Galaxy and eventually expand to other galaxies. This would require a map of the galaxies (standard galaxy pics would do, and maps generated for each galaxy, though not loaded in memory, until you are in that galaxy, and only when the player is currently working in that galaxy. Each galaxy has its own races, with abilities, agendas, etcetera. In the Lensmen se

I have to stand by Stardock here. I have absolutely no problem with activation, especially where updates are concerned. Stardock does not wish to support pirated copies with updates, which costs money to do. Activation is not DRM. It is an Anti-Piracy measure. Adobe had to go with activation after version 7 of Photoshop due to piracy. Microsoft had to go with activation of Windows, starting with XP, due to the same problem. I will buy the boxed gold edition for my 64 b

It is not just the High End 3D CG apps that depend on OpenGL, a growing number of mid to lower end apps require OpenGL. Microsoft changed the WDDM API from XP to a new one in Vista, which makes using OpenGL apps dicey, until companies like nVidia and ATI catch up. One big Gotcha! with RTM Vista's installer: Even if you bought Ultimate, You may or may not have Ultimate at the end of the installation! Vista will install the version IT thinks is appropriate for you, based on your hardware.

A Real World example of something believed to be impossible, being done, is the Tungsten Filament of our common incandescent Light Bulb. The Laws of Physics said it is Impossible to extrude tungsten into a wire so thin, because it is Too Brittle! No Scientist ever bothered to attempt it, cause they Already Knew it was Impossible. The man who did it, did NOT know it was Impossible. Science Fiction uses the word Fiction for a Reason.
