I will jump in to defend the city building concept. Regressing to the Civ "all-cities-are-one-tile" idea is a non-starter in my opinion. The cities are beautiful things. You don't need to go crazy (or throw a unique feature into the scrapbin) to fix the problem. There are some really good ideas in this thread already. I like the idea of penalizing cities for sprawl. So the further from the city center the higher the maintenance. (Can't fin
I kinda like the city flowing organically out into the map. But then, I kinda place my buildings randomly (though sometimes I'll expand to swallow a nearby resource). So the overhead view doesn't help and it's less attractive. Plus it screws with the camera unless I click on "Done" which I don't always do. The overhead view just makes it clear to me how much the cities lack roads. From overhead, everything seems very isolated and the cities just
I get that the beasts try to avoid civilization but this is a little ridiculous. This umberdroth has been sitting in this corner of the map for 100s of turns. At first his territory was about 6 squares, then 4, then 2, and now just the one he's standing on. He's never attacked anyone so far as I can tell. And each time his territory shrinks he just retreats. He shows absolutely no aggression. He's cute. I kinda want to a

I am not very good at remembering the names of my AI opponents. So when [RANDOM AI #1] comes to me and says "I will give you 100 gold to declare war on [RANDOM AI #2]" I honestly have no idea if that is my uber strong neighbor or the guy from across the map. Suggestion #1. AI Negotiation requests should be made through the regular negotiation screen. An emissary can appear using the same Yes/No dialog you use now, but if you say Yes it just opens up the negotiation screen.
One of the items I collected in my travels was a scroll that promised to save me from peril. I quickly found myself in peril and used it. I was expecting the battle to end and my champion's army to return to the nearest city. The battle ended, the summary screen came up with "Defeat" and the opposing army "died" on the main map. So... um... instant win?
so we can expect the AI to besiege us with wave after wave of pioneer?

That being said, use of high-power magic spells should carry a risk to the caster. You can use the same mechanic as if the hero were defeated in battle. Save against Intelligence and Luck or something like that. The spell could still work, but the hero would be out of commission for a while, and ca
