And why not some kind of mechanincs like in res publica romana (the boardgame)? Or pandemie (the boardgame)? You play against opponenets, but also against the game (maybe the magic itself would disolve into matter beacause of too many uses) which can kill you if you're anaware.
Would I be correct in assumeing that we can agree on the following? Random helps replayability. Random that removes player choice is bad. With both a random map generator AND a map editor I would say it is safe to assume that replayability will not be hurt by 'Stale' maps. My concern is replayability due to 'Stale' tactics. I'm going to go back to Starcraft again as it is a GREAT game and when i
Maybe there should some hard limit, then some spells/abilities/traits/anything else that could raise a bit that limit (or lower if you take a "bad" trait at faction creation - if that kind of system ever exist) Without any magic you can just build the tier 1 of ennemy. With the appropriated spell (assimilation? Know your ennemy?) you can build higher tier units. But the best ones could never be built. Or you could buy them (not build them !). It would some kind of mercenary un
In fact the "magic is used for everything" is excellent. You have to make real choices.
Good idea, and I think the devs thought about it before : you'll be able to expand existing cities when they grow. So you you'll probably won't need as much cities as you can hold.
In fact I don't understand why spells "could" be random? Wizards work with no idea of what they can achieve? hum ... and why not some "general" kind of spells like attack/defense/global/diplomacy/etc.... and you have the option to ask something mor or less precise to your wizards. If you give just general indication the research is fast. If you give them very precise things it takes longer to achieve. For instance, you ask in research a defence spells. It's fast but you don't
And why not restrict it? You can only build tier 3 or less units (with for instance 5 or 6 tiers of units) from other countries. So when you choose a faction ou can build its powefful units and you'll be able to build the less powerfull from other factions. Or a spell can raise the level of foreign units you can create : "Assimilation spell" or something like that.
thanks for the replies guys. I know that kind of games take forever to setup. I own Axis&Allies and The War of the Ring. We generally are 3 to play together, so playing Axis or WotR is not the best because it's always 2 against 1. That's why I'm looking at Twilight Imperium... because this game is free-for-all right? Thanks again.
It certainly is not a good game with only 3 players. Don't misunderstand me : t
An old PnP I played used an astrological system to raise/lower power of spells. It would be awsome to have something like that " - No, wait for 5 days, the moons will be good for the ritual - But we can't, the annemy is at our door! - Buy us time. that spell will make us so powerfull - 'derstood." *dreams*
Can we pre-order with an other way? I think about transfer. Because I just can't pre order with my card .. it expires in january 2009 (and I don't have my new one). So impulse would charge a card that is out of order. A simple transfer would be easier. Or will I have to wait for my new card?
I finally succeeded in uploading avatar (from ie that didn't have lastest flash player installed), but each post I made before don't show my avatar. The posts I do now work just fine.

If I want to try something new I want to chose it! If the spell systems allows for research with a system like ars magica it would be an absolute blast, and without the need to random things to try new things. I'm really startled by how much the "launch" moment here has stirred up my role-playing
Quoting Torment, reply 15Have you guys seen the comments about the graphics on the various forums? Many people are whining about the graphics style already. I think that might be why vieuxchat started this thread.
Yep I want to be sure that devs have already chosen their art direction. Because it would be a shame if they change the way it looks. Yes it's a bit cartoonish. But how many games have the same look? I'
Maybe a succession system could be the way to avoid the fact that those that are strong early on will have a great chance to win. You would also have to think about succession.
Disease against resistance was because I specifically thought of mounted characters. It would make sense for them to have high endurance, the ability to fight longer than someone unmounted, but why would they resist a disease better? I imagine weapon length would be a good thing to look at, though wouldn't it become endlessly complex with non-standard attacks are involved such as the claws of a demon? Still, I like the ide
Why making resistance the same stats for magic and disease resistance? It's the endurance that should play the "resist disease" role. The different weapons could be simulated with a "length of weapon". A halebard strike before a small axe. But it takes longer to recover after stiking with a halebard. So each kind of weapon would have its utility. Polearms could push the ennemy back, thus delaying the next strike from them.
Yep but where is the fun when the game oblige you? It should be a choice for the player, not something your comp' decide for you ;) If I want to not use the heal spell then it should MY choice. Random elements should be kept to the map, other players etc... Not the core system. I also hate the level up system in heroes of might and magic (and I do love that game), somtimes you can't make the hero you like cause the game never let you choose the spells you want.
The problem with AOW was that in long battles you had to make your camera move a lot. A simple zoom out/zoom in like in supreme commander or sins of a solar empire would resolve that problem and let you focus on strategy and less babysitting your units.
For sure. But so early in the development, i'm not sure it has already been carved on stone. Has it?
you play your turn then it creates a file with all your orders. You send the file to the host. When the host has the orders of everyone it launches the turn, then send back to each player the new turn .. and etc ...
To you, all mighty devs !! We know that your inspiration came from civ4, dominions 3, Master of magic, heroes of might and magic. But did you played fall from heaven 2 the mod for civ4? And Fantasy wars (and the old fantasy general)? And Combat Mission? And the total war series? And did you have some non-computer influence? Like the pen and paper RPG Ars Magica? Did you played some wargames?
And I forgot about achievements ! Sins of a solar empire had it the good way : it adds high replayability. Trying to finish without using a single heal spell, with only the basic units or with only heroes would be a real test of skill.
Will there be an easy way to localise the game? Or will it be realeased in foreign languages? For instance will there be a way for the random map generator to create foreign names?
It would be even better with all the good things from wargames or "combat mission" : morale, fatigue, accuracy, weather, terrain, flanking, rout system, forced march, different kind of armor (heavy armor would lessen speed), frenzy, weapns with area of effect etc... *dreams* edit : and reactive fire, zone of control, wounds like in dominions 3 ...
