So I am messing around with making schemas for various files, such as the CoreRaceConfigs.xml and the Sovereign/unit xml files as well. I figured it would be a good idea to put restrictions in the schema so I can validate the data later on. I'm working on the regex for the colors (UnitSkinColor, UnitHairColor,BuildingPrimaryColor, etc.) which has your basic format of R,G,B (i.e. 155,210,32). No problems there. The issue I am having is that sometimes there is a fourth val

The designer may be part of the visualization tools that only come on the Ultimate version. Those tools really put the "Visual" in Visual Studio, btw. Walking through the namespaces on the standard MS libraries gives me a great idea on how it all relates to each other. The XSD is the definition of the xml file. Basically it lays out the structure and type of the data in the xml file. It is very handy for projects like what Murteas is working on, since he needs to consistently re
Believe me, you want me to take it personally. If I didn't, we wouldn't be making multi million dollar fantasy strategy games for the PC in 2010. Almost all the other companies want to go for eye candy or fps/console type games nowadays. Nobody want

I posted how I made the XSD here . I had lots of pics to explain and I didn't want to hijack this thread so I made a new one. Enjoy.

Ok, I was going to post this in Nitey47's faction mod guide but since I have too many pics I didn't want to threadjack. Anyhow, I have VS 2010 Ultimate, so I am not sure if this is part of the visualization tools (which effing rock, btw), or if this is part of the standard package. So this is how I did it step by step, warning: lots of pics, but I wanted to be complete. OK, First I opened up the xml &n
Number of Action points a spell takes to cast is based on the caster’s wisdom.
Thank you. The # of shards multiplying the effects of spells sounds pretty nifty as well.

Not sure if this will help anyone, but mucking around in VS 2010 got me this pretty little XSD....enjoy.

Ummm, it doesn't get much more human readable than XML (hence the long load times). They did us a huge favor by using XML vs. other languages that would take people a while to learn if they didn't know them already. I am sure there are those who are working at coding some visual tools for the XML though...however it is probably prudent to wait til gold for those since there things still in flux.

If conversations with the woman you love typically have you saying, "Thank you mistress, may I have another?" ...then you may think Beta 3C is fun. If having your intestines ripped out with a fork sounds like a good way to pass an afternoon... ...then you may think Beta 3C is fun. Hmmmm, maybe I should start a thread with that and let everyone else chime in ;)

I posted one over in the spell request thread, but it looks like a week's worth of posts disappeared from that thread.
That said, with AP I'd rather see the spell cost it's mana cost in AP. If it's just the level, you can still carpet bomb fireballs.
Interesting notion. Either way it can be made to work, simply by shifting spells up or down in level, or up or down in mana cost. It is simply a balance issue at that point. The question is how many spells (and of what level) should a Sov be able to cast in a combat round? Once that is deter

I have 4 Intel-X25M 80 GB SSDs in Raid 00 on an LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i. I load my current games on the Raid array all the time, as well as most of my apps. Since you only have 30 gb you will have to swap games in and out probably. Right now with the beta what takes the longest in loading up Elemental is the wait to d/l some of the files off of Stardock's servers. This is only for the beta though and once it gets released then that bottleneck won't be there anymore. So loading it on your

I like how the Master Quest is going. I am curious if the AI can and will pursue the Master Quest as well, and if it can, are the pieces of the Forge the AI is chasing after the same 5 pieces I am looking for? It would make for an interesting game with the AI, and perhaps later for Multiplayer as well...

How about a spell costing its level in APs to cast? I.E a level 4 spell takes 4 AP to cast. Any attacking/moving by the caster during the turns it takes to complete interrupts the spell. This way an opponent has 2 or 3 turns to try to interrupt a Sovereign casting a 9th lvl nuke spell. Also keeps someone from busting out 3 or 4 high level spells per turn. If spell level= # of APs doesn't balance, you can always toss a modifier in there: (modifer * Spell Level) = # of APs...note that c
So your suggestion would be the unit cannot move IF THE DEFENDER SURVIVES? That sounds like it has all sorts of tactical goodness.
Hmmm, I hadn't thought of that. That *could* be interesting. Or the attacking unit can move if defender survives, but the defender gets a free attack. Attacks of opportunity were an awesome thing in D&D. Love the fact that movement range is highlighted in tactical combat, and that tactical spells are all at the front of the book in combat. Not so sure I like that after a unit attacks (in tactical combat) it is planted still and cannot move for the rest of the turn after that. High level Sov unit *should* be able to mow them down like wheat at harvest time (move, kill, move, kill some more) ala Sauron... During Sov creation...most perks cost 10 points, and most weaknesses only give you
