I usually create my own faction of the race of "Men" and play a created sov of the race of "men". Why? They can use most of the gear in the game. Lame reason, but its the truth.

What race and faction are you using? Waht race is your Sov? If you play as a Kingdom aligned Wraith and try to upgrade the peasants, you can't put armor on them. If you are using a Large race Sov for a Kingdom, you can't get armor for him/her.
