I haven't seen anything to indicate the magic system is the "crowning jewel" of the game.
I seem to remember seeing something like this in one of the Dev Journals, I have been looking for it, but can't seem to find anything. So maybe I (and Pigeon) are wrong or read more into something Frogboy said than what was ment... Or maybe I'm just not that good in finding things again...
Of course Chess provides significantly less options than Elemental, but for you I always have to use the most basic comparisons available. These are both TBS games and the main differences is one has only two players, fixed amount of units, no diplomacy, no magic, no structures, etc., etc., which are all extra variables which reduce strategic options... however the point is the size of the chessboard clearly reduces or increases strategic options even for chess.
This m

I don't think an expensive trailer is needed for this game, as said before in this thread, Stardock depends partially on word of mouth the get a buzz going for their games. I'm pretty sure we'll get to see a decent trailer when the time to release is getting closer. But I must also admit that high quality trailers can help to get me interested in games, for instance most (all?) trailers for Blizzards games are beautifully made, and are worth watching more then once. Also the trailer f
sadly it doesn't seem like it has many other people excited. Dang, I thought it was a pretty nifty idea.
Don't worry too much by the seemingly lack of interest, some people have other things to do than hanging out on the Elemental forum (Yeah, I know, frightening concept... [e digicons][/e] ) And the other threads about espionage take time to keep up with... Anyway, about your idea, it really sounds interesting... It would certainly be something I'd like
at some point will probably organize everything on this thread. for now, here is a site for those who've never programmed anything and use windows: http://pythonbook.coffeeghost.net/
With this site, you have to be carefull, the 'book' that is supplied on this site, uses Python 2.x while Elemental (As far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong...) is using Python 3.1. This might not sound as a problem, but one of the first pro

To be honest, I didn't really like the art-style when the first screenshots were released, but now that I have had the time to get used to it, and with the release of the newer screenshots, I'm really starting to like it a lot, it's an unique style. It might not be ultra realistic, but it is very clear and shows what needs to be shown. And as has been said in this thread more than once, graphics ain't everything. The game must be fun, stable, fun immersive... did I mention fun? <

If you look to the screenshots in the latest Dev Journal you'll see there is a 'Campaign' and a 'Skirmish' button, so I'd guess the campaign will be where we'll find most of the story-elements and skirmish will be the completly random maps without any real story elements.
I would rather there be no story, and we instead have a good dynamic random map generator, along with a solid "fantasy" focus. I will mod out most of the s

Looks nice, can't wait to start playing it... On the last screenshot you added
When we zoom in, the city name should dissapear.
Well, I don't think it should, it should get smaller and (if possible) it shouldn't be placed on top of the city, but I think it should still be visible.

The ability to counter any or most spells sounds very interesting, and I sure hope that something like this gets into the game...
I've always loved Steven Eriksons take on magic - basically, its dangerous. Very dangerous, and capable of destroying armies at its highest levels, but also very taxing, and dangerous for the wielder. You might end up being consumed if the power you try to control, slip from your fingers.
I think this is something that

Epic music is good if used sparingly, epic music used all the time stops being epic... For a game like this, I'd expect most of the music to be instrumental, some flutes, some strings... While in a city some more folky, tavern music. The really epic music should be reserved for close battles, important finds or events (Hey, you just befriended a dragon...) and off course the end game (victory or defeat...).
What does everyone think decent diplomacy DOES entail? I want a decent alliance system, some options to entice war between nations, perhaps LIMITED tech trading (in some games tech trading gets exploited to the high heavens), maybe map trading, trade agreements not including special resources but just a method to boost income, and maybe some passage agreements.
I don't know if you'd include this in 'some passage agreements',
The game is based around two diametrically opposed forces, good and evil, fighting it out. Diplomacy seems a bit unnecessary, but Espionage just seems out of place.
The campaign is indeed based around those two forces (not the sandbox) but even in the campaign there are 6 (or 7??) humanoid and fallen factions. Diplomacy between those factions at least should be more then 'Hey, let's beat up the big guy...'. Outside the campaign (as Wintersong mentioned) anything goes, s

Indeed, we shouldn't talk about the Epic story gene.... Oops... [e digicons]O:)[/e] I mean off-course You-Know-What... But anyway, a quest-log linked to the event logging (Which was already mentioned I think) sounds very reasonable and I wouldn't be surprised if it is already on the todo-list...
I think that says more about you than it does about the games.....
Nicely put... [e digicons][/e] For some people graphics is everything, on the other hand, there are people who are still playing pure ASCII games like Angband, Dwarf Fortress, ... And to the OP... Welcome on board... About the diplomacy, I think the players should have at least the same options as the AI, I hate games where the AI I have a good relation with starts complaining
Tell us what you think.
As you said, you don't have any financial pressure to put the game out in February, and everyone who wants can join the beta by placing a pre-order. So I'd say, take all the time you want to make the best game possible...
There was a quote from soemone the other day about how if they spend 4 years on this game, 3 and a half years of that time will be the time spent buildling the technology; only 6 months would be actually turning that technology into a game.
I really love that category idea. I am just wondering how I would work the prize into that system. Maybe if the categories were limited. Or perhaps only prizes for certain categories. Hmm... *Ponders*
As you seem to think about doing more than one competition, why don't you choose a different category everytime? That way, you can start with something relatively easy (Best new model) and work up to some really extensive mods (Best Total Conversion). This way, you also gi
