I can't believe I'm saying this, but don't be too hard on marketing. They do have a certain amount of justification for their advice. There's a status quo in gaming that a lot of people want to protect, and Stardock isn't really supporting that. They're a small company, they're very involved with their players (the only other game-maker I can think of that's as personally involved with his players is Steve Fawkner), and they have their own digital dist

It goes Neutral->Warm->Friendly->Close. You can only try to form an alliance when Close, though they may not accept it (at least not without some palm grease).

My understanding is that rings and moons are just visual, but I could be wrong. I have to disagree with any correlation between planet size and quality. Look at Jupiter. It's huge and useless.

Because maximum production and sowing insurrection aren't always enough. Sometimes you need to give somebody a good intergalactic slap, and you don't want to wait for it. Sure, you want to do all those things, you mentioned, but no matter how much money you have, you're going to eventually max out those avenues, and the bad guys are still going to be coming after you.

I prefer to wait a while before taking advantage of the minor races. Here's how I do it: Wait until a minor race is in a losing war with one of the other majors. By this time, I should have a few trade goods and a decent tech stockpile. I trade my trade goods and whatever tech for as much of their tech/money/influence as I can get, and as valuable as trade goods are, I usually get a pretty good haul out of it. Then I either turn around and t

The "Strong/Weak" information doesn't necessarily reflect natural abilities. Instead, it's more of an overall indicator of that races personality and priorities. For example, the Terrans like diplomatic techs and structures, and will often concentrate on them, which is why those jerks keep beating me to diplomatic translators.

Same thing happened to me. I just finished the first mission on Normal. I took one of the central planets (the better one), and the Altarians took the other. From then on, aside from one oddly placed military starbase, the Altarians completely ignored the Drengin and just built influence starbases around my home planet. It didn't seem to make a lot of difference, though, so I didn't worry about it. Looked a bit odd, though.

I've got GalCiv 1 on my laptop right now. While I do most of my gaming on a desktop, I sometimes prefer to play sitting on my couch. And, of course, it's nice to be able to play when I'm not at home.

I am worrying a lot more about the Overmind. Seems like I gotta go design a few more Battlestar concepts. They look like they would even ally with cybernectic lifeforms... *shudders* Ally? The Overmind does not ally. Cybernetic lifeforms, however, will be allowed to serve in ... some capacity.
