If your determined to try xlabel (I use it, its a great mod) be sure to make use of the forums at LS Universe. The X module author frequents the forums and answers questions very promptly.

One way you can tackle it, is to take an existing theme and modify it. Take it a module at a time (as Hippy suggests) and change the inages, functionality etc. That will mean looking at the modules' readme. Gradually change all the modules till you have your own theme. I don't think the existing system needs changing, but here's someting that might be added. Why not have it so a rating can't be applied by a user, till they have at least downloaded that skin. That won't gaurantee (sp?) the user will install the skin, but it may dissuade some from abusing the intent of rating skins. Some may think twice about rating a bunch of skins at "1" if they have to contribute to that skins' download totals too.

I think Crae is right. A lot of the original skinned apps\programs\whatever are disappearing or dormant. The alternative shell scene has barely more than a pulse. It looks like most of the original skinners and innovators have left. I would say that Stardock's apps are thriving though. So it appears the skinning scene has morphed into what we see today. Seeing as you can't download a screenshot, there seems little reason to keep older shots in the library. I would dump anything older than a month or two. It would free up a little server space if nothing else.
