I actually like this change. For a sandbox game, creating my own character always helps me get more invested in the world than picking from a few predefined heroes. Keeping the old characters around as NPCs also feels like a good compromise.

Nice to see them focusing on the UI. A good strategy game lives or dies by how easy it is to manage information, and even small quality of life improvements can make long sessions a lot more enjoyable.

I used to restart a lot more than I’d like to admit, especially in 4X games. Now I try to just roll with it unless the start is completely unplayable. Most of the time a “bad” opening just changes the story of the campaign rather than ruining it.
