Should I understand from your comment that you don't think American businesses do this? No, I don't. I have no problem paying cheaper because the cost of living in Mexico

Doesn't that mean that there is a "viable" alternative to fossile fuel as demonstrated by Maine's 30% Renewable Standard? Not really. Maine represents a very small percentage of the US's power generation. In 2003, the US generated 1,970,273 thousand megawatt hours of electricity with coal. By comparison

He says that the deeper into creation and the nature of the universe he gets, the more he believes in "Intelligent Design".....a Divine Creator. He feels that it's the only real explanation for the existence of everything. Got a link for this?

hmm...that's funny since Maine requires the use of at least 30% renewable fuels, the nation is moving toward adopting a renewable fuel standard and quite a bit of Europe relies on wind and solar power for alternative enery...and none of that is nuclear power Most of the "renewable" energy in Maine is bu

welcome education on the subject of alternative fuel sources, as I'm sure do must Americans. Here is a crash course: Currently, the only viable alternative to fossil fuels is nuclear power.

I would never pay three times the price or even twice the price. So, if the cost is too high, you'd rather buy gloves from the company that pays its workers 50 cents an hour and dumps its waste into a river?

Some Kerry supporters support the war; some Kerry supporters oppose it. Kerry agrees with his supporters. It looks lilke Kerry has taken the position of someone who is looking to cut our losses in Iraq and greatly reduce our presence there.

many conservatives are so shortsighted that they honestly believe that everyone who's out of work is where they are because they are slackers (an accusation I've never had levelled against me, mind you), Only if they're "permanently" out of work.

I think the relevent question though is, "How much more are YOU willing to pay for (insert item here) to have it made with a living wage?"

The examples you give are totally over the top. I don't think so. Recently I had the choice of buying shoes made in Italy vs. shoes made in China. They seemed to be of comparable quality, but the shoes made in Italy were twice as expensive.

"Discouraged Workers" (people without a job but who are not actively seeking one) have never been counted as unemployed. They weren't in the 1990s, they aren't now. Unless you have some evidence that there are significantly more discouraged workers now than then, your argument doesn't hold any water. The average salary of new jobs is higher than the national average. Try looking around at factcheck.org. What specifically should be d

Trust busting is consistent with the belief in free-market competition. When you have a monopoly controlling the market, you don't have free-market competition. Why should small businesses (aka most of the top 1% of individual income earners) pay for everyone's health care?

I wasn't trying to imply that Afghanistan was finished. My point was, we are probably going to have troops in Afghanistan for a long time, and to suggest that it should preclude US action elsewhere means that we won't be doing anything else for a long time.

Consider that schools operate 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 9 months out of the year. Prisons operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months a year. Even if prisoners get 3x more $ per year, students still get more $ per hour. Iirc President Bush has proposed a form of medical arbitration similar to your plan. Curbing lawsuits isn't a silver bullet, but it is important. Doesn't the government control the price of government funded

I think it is up to individuals to decide how hurricane-proof they want their home to be. Ebbets Field was an actual stadium the Dodgers used to play in. The "Lambert" gaffe was likely due to Kerry misremembering his cheat sheet. People in Wisconsin care about the Packers much more than people in LA care about the Dodgers.

Maybe it's because liberals aren't interested in creating wealth. Maybe they are more interested in spending their time making the world a better place to live. There's nothing wrong with that, but the questions is: Are they doing something that is actually helpful, or are they doing something that seem
