Grab Notepad++ if you want a robust text editor. Much the same as Ultra Edit (I actually find it a wee bit better) and it's freeware (released under GPL license) As for reading XML files. In C# you'll ideally want to read it into an XDocument, which if memory serves me right can be done from an XmlReader. Gives you the ability to query for elements and attributes. Not only that, but it will give you the ability to validate the XML on load rather than crashing on malform

When you scroll away from your sovreign, the destination marker vanishes as well. Pretty easy to reproduce, set a destination somewhere away from your sovreign and then scroll away from him. Around the time he leaves the map (being obscured by the UI doesn't do) your destination will cease rendering. Scroll back so both are in view again, and it will show up again. Magic!

There are other references to Athos, some of them predating the monastic order, and even "evil" references to Athos. In Ancient Greek mythology the Giantess, whom the Holy mountain Athos is named after, threw said mountain at Zeus. He knocked it to the ground where it is today. Athos 1 was a tanker which spilled 265,000 galleons of crude oil into the Delaware river in 2004. Qualifies as evil for me :) For a more complete list you can loo

When alt-tabbing from the game, upon tabbing back in the cloth map is just plain cloth. Pardon the pun. Units show up on the map, but textures for fertile lands/resources/pouches etc. are gone. Game runs fine afterwards, just sans the graphics. Quitting to main menu and starting a new game doesn't fix it, exiting to windows and re-launching does though.
I didn't see much point in getting into the details of the difference between a pointer and an Object Reference and how that's handled... Seemed sufficient to compare it to pass by reference, especially since it's horribly bad practice to assign new objects to the input object reference anyway. Even in Java where it'd be "safe".
Oh I completely agree that it's a horrible practice to reassign input objects, and I can't off

Interesting post, but some of your practices would make me cry out in horror. For instance the much abused Hungarian notation, works fine as long as you don't change your type. But what happens when someone changes the type of lShipCount to unsigned long and forgets to update the variable name? Not terribly fond of the m_ prefix either, but that one doesn't have the same potential of producing Coding Horror. I saw some good points as to why it might help in the other posts, but I'm a

If it gives you a bonus, sure you can ignore it.... but at your own peril. Remember, people: players want to WIN. Just my little take on achievments. They do add value to a game, after all they give you something to strive for, but a bucketful of silly achievments just tends to make the game experience suffer for me. For instance, having an achievment to play/win an online game is nice, I could even appreciate one for playing/winning some absurd number as well. If, on the other hand, there is one for 1 game, another for 5, then 10 etc it tends to be meaningless. That said, I dislike having achiev
