In a subsequent game I have not been able to reproduce the problem, no crashes.

Pretty simple, just a crash to desktop. Just wanted to play a quick game to see how the game runs on my new machine. Very quickly processed many turns, just trying various screens and functions out. They hand out patents like candy, even invalid ones. The real question is, can the patent you get stand up to challenge or be be successfully enforced. Try to enforce your patent, then you'll find out if it passes muster. Otherwise, they're happy to take your money and rubber stamp your patent. (plus, patents can be challenged as well, so why not let challengers or the people someone is trying to enforce a patent against do all the work of identifying and weeding out invalid
