Colonization is a great game (guess what I did all day this past Columbus Day) but the resource model works for the theme of the game; the emergence of independent European economies in the New World. Elemental is a fantasy game whose emphasis (I had/have/will continue to hope) is on the unfolding of a fantasy narrative. Narratives that emerge from gameplay should be more like reading Silmarillion or the Earthsea cycle. We don't really care where the ore came from,

In brief, NAY to refined resources! I am not saying it can not work, I just don't want to waste my playing time pining over increasing the rate at which my materials are converted into finished goods, or my metals into iron or mithril ingots, or precious stones (there are four examples of potential refined resources in my plug against them! Good post. I share your aversion to DRM; if I own the disk, what more should I need? Personally, Paradox has the least offensive DRM, as Gamersgate does not require you to install software for the DRM to function; you just log in to the website and download away. Honestly, art assetts are the LEAST concern, in my opinion, next to solid game design. Once you've got that you can hire whatever graphic designer you choose. Yeah the art (and sound) were borrowed, but that's fine; it's a mod. It took the Civ engine, married it with a well-developed backstory and lore, and gave players many more ways to play any given session than vanilla Civ4. Would the Infernals or Mercurians triumph? Would another Age of Ice come about?
