What's the mechanic behind the caravan food bonus? How much food? Does it depend on where you send the caravan? Is this documented somewhere?

My wife won't let me invest in a good computer. Still, I feel that I deserve to play this game. And I'm able to play the strategic portion on the cloth map (just as I play GalCiv2 in the zoomed out map). But I think I am missing way too much by having to autoresolve all the tactical battles. I would be *super* happy if there were an option for a basic, chessboard tactical battle that completely skimped on the graphics. Thanks!

I'm playing on a much crappier machine. I'm sticking with the cloth map, but even then it's still a struggle.
