I remember using kiting a lot with my ranged heroes in MOM. This was pretty unrealistic but was partially balanced by the fact that enemy units could corner me against one of the edges of the map and that if I moved, I could only get one shot off (instead of two if I stayed stationary). It really wouldn't feel like turn-based strategy to me without a research tree.. That being said, Xia makes some excellent points, particularly about having to research the pointy sticks and planting seeds. The FE research tree is light years better than WoM's was, but it could still use a lot of improvement. I've had multiple crashes now trying to load 'quick saves' from the main menu load option after leaving the game and then returning as well. Never even get into the game before I get the Windows error popup. Autosaves and manual saves seem to work alright, though.
Regarding balance as well ~ are there any penalties now for using a bow in melee range or is there any penalty to defense if one is attacked by a melee weapon while holding a bow rather than a melee weapon? If the purpose of this is merely to gain the higher damage from a melee weapon, then I don't think there's really a need for this because mixed combat is already balanced by the fact that an archer receives 2 or possibly more free 'shots' before their

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I've noticed that when I use the numpad keys to move (on the world map), the 'orientation' of the world is the most limiting factor in what direction the keys will send my units. What I mean is, if I have rotated the map, then the numpad keys always reorient themselves to whichever way I've turned it. For example, if I've rotated 45 degrees clockwise, then the '8&

I bought the game in December of 2010, so I'll still have to wait a bit yet. Pretty impressed with their quick response though.
