Mechanics don't matter, gameplay matters. Designers love mechanics, they are fun to talk about, tweak and post about on forums. They are not gameplay. There is a long dark hallway between what is fun to design and what is fun to play. So essence is just a mechanic to me. What is it we want from essence that is appealing to gameplay? Can we ditch the mechanic and still have the gameplay we want? We can allow a s

This isn't a change in the flavor of the world, only that we are seeking to actually show that flavor in the game. ... Beg pardon, but either you're ducking my question or I didn't put it well enough. Back in the pre-beta days, the Cataclysm seemed to be a result of conflict between a p

Specifically the creatures were flawed or broken in some way. So the 'new dichotomy' to replace good vs. evil is natural vs. magical? Is magic the real villain in the Elemental world? I was hoping to see some benign or even helpful-to-humans creatures left over from the Cataclysm, but I guess they are all just weapons that got ou

As a designer my hope was to create creatures that accomplished the following goals: 1. Provided interesting strategic opportunities for combat. 2. Fit the theme of Elemental, that they felt uniquely at home in the world we were creating. Specifically the creatures were flawed or broken in some way. 3. Were creative and interesting. It is hard to hit all three requirements. Soem score higher in one catefgory

What was once a verdant forest around Cyndrum has been transformed into the Asag, a diseased land with rivers of dead fish and deep, oozing scars. Though it may initially seem empty, the Asag is full of diseased, hateful and hungry creatures. It is home to some of the new creatures players will face in Fallen Enchantress. In this creature feature, we will introduce some

I played Zelda 3d on the 3ds yesterday. It was very cool to see in 3d. Im not much of a handheld gamer (I love my huge monitor and tv to much) but the 3d did make the screen feel a lot bigger just because of the added depth. The 3d can be a little offsetting (headache inducing) so my recommendation is to try it in a store before ordering, but that is just my opinion. Also since the 3d is configured just for the person looking directly at the screen this isn't a console you want to watch

Forum poster Kenata was able to come to the office last week and spend a day with us. We talked about War of Magic, Fallen Enchantress, modding and what makes games great. My favorite moment was when Toby commented that Kenata and Jon should just marry each other after listening to Kenata praise the virtues of Chronotrigger (one of Jon's favorite games). We got some work done too. Kenata was peppered with lots of questions about what he would change in War of Magic,

Thank you for this. The error we are fighting is a game within a game issue. When you end a game (either by starting a new one or by reloading a save) all of the resources aren't being cleared up. So you lose memory each time this is done. It could be avoided by exiting war of magic and restarting, but of course thats a bad solution. We need to find out what data isn't being freed and get it released. I

Your feedback is always appreciated, and you are scoring very low on the grumpy scale so no stress there. I believe the delay you are experiencing is due to our memory changes. Specifically we are trying to free up memory by not caching and holding onto these screens all the time. We are still working on the memory and I'll make sure the Developer In Charge (i would acronym that, but it doesn't turn out well) knows about it. &

Toby recommended another one be added to the final five: Demon Lord by Tydorius When I first bought Elemental, one of the expectations I had was that of active adventurers, going out and doing wonderful or horrible things. It was advertised as a game where you were the ruler of a kingdom that was filled with your typicaly D&D adventurers, who, good or evil, for better or
