I completely lost interest in the game when a patch turned the game into a grow a single giant city game, and perhaps plant a few villages to grab resources. Has that particular issue been dealt with, or is it still by far the best strategy?

OK. bought the game many months back and was enjoying playing the game quite a bit. And then along came a patch to supposedly 'improve' the game, and from that moment, the optimum strategy was to have one super city and a few little resource claiming villages. This completely FUBARed the game for me and I quit playing with quite a bit of disgust. Have things changed or is the game still FUBAR?
I've been a Stardock customer since the very first release of Galactic Civilizations. I am a big fan of turn based strategy games and there are few companies that still make them, fewer still that do them well. In fact I have virtually never bought a shrinkwrap game off of a major publisher in the last several years (and I used to buy dozens a year). This because I find most of them very heavy on graphics and golly-gee-wiz, and extremely weak on depth of game mechanics. The marketing departme
I have had issues with Steam myself. I bought Fallout through them. A year or so later I went back to replay it and had an issue with the steam client due to a bug such that it could no longer recognize my login and so I could not play. I foolishly tried uninstalling it so I could do a reinstall, and steam uninstalled Fallout, including a whole mess of mod work I had done. Needless to say, the Steam folk got a rather nasty Email. There is a right way and a wrong way to do this sort of

I make a living selling online, videos I have created. Before piracy became ubiquitous, I could easily sell 100-200 copies of any such video and easily afford to make more. Nowadays a new video will sell around five before it is uploaded to pirate sites and no longer purchased. Needless to say that I no longer create new videos. Pi
For the record; I think Stardock has come up with the best anti-piracy system possible, while still keeping their games easy to use. I am extremely happy for instance, that they do not require an official CD in a drive in order to play. I find that sort of thing extremely annoying. Having to log on to an official site in order to get updates is a non-issue, as my system remembers passwords and such. I think their system might even be a tad easier than the old standby of download/install of mo
Fantastic ideas Heavenfall. You can be certain I for one, will play your mod. What has often irked me is that there are already minor factions in the game, six of them if I recall. But whenever I have encountered one of them in a game, their supposed city is just sitting there with them having built absolutely nothing, nor have they ventured out of their territory. Could your mod also somehow kick start these existing minor factions, as well as add new ones? As for what I would like t
I 'never' use anything but auto resolve. The tactical game is not a game at all, but an utterly superfluous exercise in meaningless and in most cases, ineffectual button clicking. 100% broken.
What?! You mean I can't put barding on my drakes? You have mentioned a lot of stats for the various mounts. I presume that they all also give the +1 overland map movement speed bonus? How about having some mount(s) able to give a +2 map movement?
I already use Notepad++ but never did find such a search function software, as much as I often wished for such. Thank you for the lead. TectCrawler can be downloaded here: http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/textcrawler/tcdownload
It occurs to me that it would be a fairly simple matter to build a mod that adds a few magic items to the merchant inventory. Make those magic items require not just an appropriate magic level, but also require the various squad technologies so they unlock at the same time as one starts to be able to build the larger units. What those magic items would do is simply add a significant number of HP to the hero, in the vicinity of 10 HP for the first level, and additional 20 HP for the second lev
This is an impressive piece of work. Thank you for sharing it. I hope you are continuing with it.
I have updated this map somewhat. There are now relatively few 'naked' regions. Pretty much anywhere you might think would be a good spot to claim real estate will have at least one resource nearby, often more than one. These placements have been fairly balanced for all player positions, so you are not getting anything your opponents are not. There are some especially nice possible city locations equidistant between the various start positions, such that they can be easily contested and fough

One potion such that they have 0.5 essence is perfectly sufficient to allow them to spend XP on essence the next time they lev

Not sure how you feel about that idea, but it would be quicker by far and accomplish the same thing.
I find if I enable cheats, it is far too tempting to then use other cheats
When I start a new game, I'll always save the game, then spend 20 or 30 turns just exploring the immediate area. The idea is to find the best starting point for my first city. Then having done that, I reload and bee line for that spot.
Here is a very simple mod I made for myself, but figured others might like to have prebuilt. Though in fact building this is ludicrously simple. This reduces unit maintenance costs to one tenth of previous, allowing you to maintain a reasonably sized standing army without using up your entire per turn gold production. http://www.filedropper.com/lowerunitmaintenance
So, if I got this right... I insert the code below into an XML file saved in the /My Games/Elemental/Mods/ folder and all should be well? (Reducing maintenance costs to 10% of current.)
DisplayName <Trans
Thank you Heavenfall. I guess I am going to have to learn a bit of this game's modding after all. But you've just done half the work for me. :-)
Funny, because I hear lots of people complain that they end up with more gold than they can spend. So far that has been closer to my experience.
I do not h
Has anyone created a mod to tweak the cost of unit upkeep? Unit upkeep right now is so high, that building a single squad of heavily armored cavalry can put you in the poor house. It has become the case that I am no longer building troops, but rather outfitting any crappy hero that comes along instead, as they apparently have no upkeep cost. And that of course renders much of the technology tree and resources rather moot. I expect that unit upkeep could be tweaked with a singl
I probably should read this whole thread to see if someone has mentioned this before, but if they had I expect this entry into the FAQ would have been changed: 3.11 How can I get other champions to cast spells like my sovereign? - The only option to let other champions utilize magic is to imbue them with your essence or to get children with your spouse that will inherit your and your spouse's magical abi
Thank you for this Heavenfall. Some of the bugs you have fixed were rather bothering me.
Doh. It somehow never occurred to me that this might be done 'in game'. Thanks Kryo.
Just where does one go to upload a map? I made a post here in the mod forum about a map I made (Gargantic), and posted an external link to the map there. But it would be nice to submit it to the 'official' mod listing/hosting.
Links now points to version two. Gargantic is a 'huge' map, 256x256, but has 'random' start positions for ten players, and with all ten playing, you will not find yourself with an overabundance of space. (It is highly recommended to play with all ten positions filled.) The center of the continent has no players, so expanding towards the center is likely a good idea. Of course the other empires will likely be doing the same thing. Each start position has some rather nice cit
