Apologize if the answer is obvious, did you try deleting the custom faction clicking with the right mouse button over the portrait?

Same problem: after patch 1.4 game started crashing. It crashes random while playing or when loading saved games or during autosaves. No problems before patch 1.4. I am playing through Steam, Windows XP sp3, all drivers updated, i'm using this pc to play a lot of games, no other one gives me problems at all. Sorry for my bad english.
