A few more things: (1) If you're not content with your starting position, you can use "CTRL+N" to quick-start a new game if (and only if) you never left the game and loaded a saved game after starting. So start a new game, play a few turns until you have a good impression of your surroundings and if things look too bad, start over. I tend to use a sword or dagger with high initiative bonus and advance up the mage tree until I get to "-1 to casting times" in parallel with one spell

I'm in my second game. In my first, I found a number of quests to raise my fame early in the game. In the current one, in spite of expanding faster I didn't find more than one until turn 75, except for two Deadly/Epic ones I'm not up to at this point, and a fake "weak" one that didn't offer any fame. I wonder if this is just bad luck, or if it has something to do with having started fairly close to two other factions and their sovereigns wandering around and getting to all of

What I'd like to know is if anyone ever plays a sovereign - or any champion - with a ranged weapon. I found Initiative to be a much too important attribute to accept the heavy penalties that usually come with ranged weapons, since with high Initiative not only do you go first, but you get to act more often altogether.
