Ill give that a try guys. Also, what do shards do? (I have a spell that converts them to death shards, but they don't seem to do anything except spawn a really weak demon

I just bought the game and played 3-4 games. Every game I get totally destroyed, even on easy. By the time I meet another faction my score is like 3 times less than theirs(on easy mode I had 25 score and everyone else had 60+). Is there a trick I'm missing? I basically explore all I can with my hero and research and build all my building with outposts near resources, but I can't seem to be able to compete with the AI.
