I love steam. I've seen a lot of people complaining about steam always needing to be online - it doesn't. Yes, you need to register your game online when you install it. And, sometimes there is a day 1 patch that will get downloaded (hello skyrim) but you'd have to do that without steam as well. Steam just makes it easy to keep a game up to date.
