Maybe we can use the number of shards to determine the level of invocations corresponding on the element ? But It's quite a good idea!
Summon familiar is in the life and death spellbook corresponding to kingdom and empire book you always have when beginning a game. Yes, you're right about the conjuration book but the game doesn't allow it by now. I was thinking of making Attack and defense relying on shards. I will try it out soon.

I just created a git base for people who know how it is working. I think that basic spellbook should be something like : - Alteration (enchantment that profit sovereign, champion and troops) - Evocation (direct damage) - ... And the costs of them should be higher and every element should be represented in each school. This will make specialized sovereigns able to profit from different shards even with only one spellbook
in the magic tree in tech knowledge, there is an expert spellbook research which gives access to new spells and the book of invocation is one of these expert spellbooks.
