MOM and AOW both had a magic resistance stat. Seems hard to understand how Elemental devs decided it was not needed.

Cities in Master of Magic made a lot more sense. The rate of growth depended on different conditions. And the population were treated as a resource in that you could allocate them more toward farming, or toward manufacturing/production.
I'm a Trog, and I'm running the Tarth kingdom
To my king, the shop only displays weapons, shields, backpacks, rings. All the head, body, arm, and leg armor is missing. If another hero goes to the shop, they see everything. Armor can be bought by another hero, and traded to my king. But none of it shows up in the king's screen to equip the armor. I can mail in a savegame or something.
My king can't see any armor in the town shop, only weapons and shields. i thought it was because I hadn't upgraded something. But then I noticed his daughter can see and buy the armor. I had her buy him a set, traded it to him, but it doesn't even show up in his inventory as equippable items. Are some races not allowed to use metal armor?
Despite my computer being relatively modern, the game runs very poorly. I don't get a lot of crashes, it just runs as though I'm playing on a 10 year old computer. Here's the error log after the OOM crash. http://pastebin.ca/1927119
While you're waiting for Elemental to be finished/polished, play Age of Wonders : Shadow Magic. It's an excellent game. And to me seems a lot more similar in spirit to MOM than EWOM is/will be. While the technology trees are a neat concept, they feel completely out of place in a game which was supposed to have been MOM2.
I secrete, then retreat, in that order.
