I experience the same issue while holding down shift. I currently do not use the Hardware Cursor option but have not attempted to do so. I have an ATI HD4550 without the post-leak-fix drivers though the drivers are not old. My mouse is a Sunbeam uh... Sunbeam Somethingorother. I hope this helps specify it a little bit. I'd like to throw my two cents into the equation. I think the exaggeration of asking for a tutorial to turn on a toaster is GREAT, but utterly necessary: NO game should assume prior knowledge. It doesn't have to be as easy as using a toaster oven, but it should be at least moderately intuitive. Maybe I'm from Uganda or some location severely suffering from a severe toaster shortage.
