Having flipped from losing games to destroying the AI in the last few days, I can say that two things seem critical. Early combat success and planning growth around capitalizing on racial/nation abilities. Weak default Sovereigns make the game a LOT harder for the player learning the game because they obscure the good strategies and make the start harder against monsters. Even after logging 100's hours in War of Magic, I've been unable to come close to beating a game of Fallen Enchantress on Normal. My out of the gate strategy seems to be keeping pace with the AI, but after about turn 30-50, it just becomes a question of time before the AI wins. Champions/Soveriegn at full hit points. Start a fight with a target on the Strategic map. Sovereign and/or champion do not load into fight. End of battle has Soveriegn or Champion at zero HP. Steam is an excellent middleman application between publishers and gamers - and how it performs for gamers is impacted on a case by case basis by publisher demands.
