I say they should keep the tactical combat and improve it. My suggestion would be to make directional based attacks matter. Say a heavy armored unit (lets say 80 defense) is being attacked from the front 3 squares its facing will have their defense rolls be able to be 100% of that, so they can roll an 80 for defense and be able to counter attack. being attacked from the sides would reduce defense rolls by 15% so a max defense roll of 68 and still be able to counter attack.
