20-25 hours? Doesn't sound like a good tutorial. I think you should be able to learn the basics of a game in less than an hour before moving on to playing the real deal. It's not the place of a tutorial to introduce every single unit, tech, race, building and spell in the game. Just the basic concepts please, leave the rest to discovery.
eventually the hobby became too expensive to continue.
You ought to check out some open source projects and tools. There is a ton of information on the internet that'll teach you programming. The first language I learned was C. You can download gcc (the gnu compiler collection) which is free software and includes a C compiler among many other things. For simple things, you can literally write a main function and a few lines of code in a text fi

I like the idea of creating items, MoM style. I do not like the idea of creating spells. I've seen many instances of the former done right and executed extremely well. I have never seen the latter done so well. I think it really comes down to complexity. Items are simple, predictable and can be broken down into discrete categories based on use. Spells are far more complex, unpredictable and varied and attempting to give them the same treatment as items le

That depends. If the game's python scripting API is capable of presenting users with dialog windows with all manner of buttons, images and text of the modder's choosing then it should be totally possible.

Hopefully the game will be moddable enough that we can create our own map generation scripts. I'd like one that generates the 2 parallel worlds of Arcanus and Myrror for my MoM remake mod.
By plains do you mean dimensions? Here is the map of the world Brad posted but this is probably for the main story.
By plains I meant planes. [e digicons][/e] Master of Magic had 2 planes of existence: Arcanus and Myrror. When you started a new game, each plane was generated independently of the other. In essence, there were 2 completely different world maps. <p c

Ahh. Hopefully there will be 2 plains. Makes sense, considering there are the 2 main "races" of men and fallen.
I defnitely think most of it can be modded...especially the spells and units. The only thing I'm unsure of is the "alternate plane of existence." We don't know if that type of feature is in the game.
I dunno, the tower in this screenshot reminds me of the wizard tower from MoM:

Sweet! We'll definitely have to wait and see how the game turns out; especially how extensive the modding tools are, however, the fact that it's all done in python is very encouraging. As far as epic text goes, sure, if you don't mind writing spell descriptions, item descriptions, unit descriptions, hero and wizard backgrounds.

I'm a huge MoM fan and have been waiting years for a true sequel, which judging by the things I have read, may never happen. Elemental, from what I now know, has been described as "inspired by MoM, yet very different" and also as "highly moddable". What I am wondering is if it will be moddable enough for the fans to recreate a near-perfect MoM clone (obviously with new graphics, sound, AI etc). So, will it? All of the spells, units, races, resources and special rule

MoM had a similar VC known as the Spell of Mastery. That really has nothing to do with the issue. The issue at hand is one of positive or negative reinforcement. Look at a racing game for example: In "realistic" racing games there is a system known as drafting. It is based on real life aerodynamics. Essentially, it allows a car to tuck in behind another car and draft off of it. This greatly reduces drag on the tailing car, giving it an advantage ove

I hope they don't do anything to mess with it. Honestly, I hope they work to enhance it. One of the reasons MoM is so addictive is the incredible sensation of growing power. You feel incredibly overpowered, as if you are getting away with something you shouldn't be. Civ 4, on the other hand, has the opposite effect. It feels like the game is stacked against you, dragging you down. Now I'll be the first to admit that MoM has an incredibly poor AI.

No. The steamroller effect is extremely important to keep the game from bogging down in the latter stages. Sid Meier and crew put a ton of effort into combatting the steamroller effect in Civ 4. They introduced a system that ramps up maintenance costs with every new city you control. This type of system is known in game design circles as "negative feedback". Negative feedback has the annoying tendency of drawing the game out endlessly and making the whole exe
