I'll echo the responses to just change the name of "ale" to something more ambiguous.

Tarn Adams, the developer, has made it very clear that he doesn't intend to relinquish any kind of creative control over Dwarf Fortress, nor does he wish to switch away from it being freeware. So, short of a studio giving him a grant just to encourage his awesomeness, we're not going to see any drastic changes to the development model/team. He has said he'd entertain the idea of working at a studio on unrelated projects if he needed the money, but that would mean cutting into DF
How about things like being a werewolf or vampire, and the associated bonuses and drawbacks of each. Or whatever other magical ailments you prefer :)
I think it would best implemented as a city construction. Choose to build a road in your city interface, this takes you to the road designing interface, design your road to wherever from wherever, and the road is added to that city's build queue.
It's also worth pointing out that the biggest direct competition to Elemental isn't CivV, it's a Fall From Heaven mod for CivV. I'm not sure if the crew that did the one for CivIV is planning on tackling CivV, but even if they are it would be months before they had something that was playable. With Elemental coming out earlier, you'd have a head start on them in terms of player base. Chris Hill
Unless somethi
I agree, but more of a grey-blue so it doesn't overwhelm the drab color style they're going with on the cloth map.
I think it's better to place the shards randomly and then have them affect their surroundings in world gen. So I water shard might create a bunch of springs in a desert and spawn a river, earth could create interesting geography or minerals, etc.
I think all text is placeholder at this point, which is readily obvious in the kingdom descriptions. They won't/shouldn't worry about grammar and precise descriptions until the underlying mechanics are all firmly decided upon.
Quoting ZehDon, reply 8Anyway, so if I pre-order the game today, as in right now, I can still get into the Beta? So.. er.. anyone? I want to give you my money, really, I just need clarification on this one point.
You can get into Beta 1 if you pre-order before the end of September. After that you have to wait for Beta 2.
I buried myself in my recently purchased Playstation 2 - I highly recommend picking up a Slim Line now for a bargain price.
The PS2 is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of console gaming. Do yourself a favor and pick up Gran Turismo 4, Ratchet & Clank, and Dynasty Warriors 5.
The first games I recall playing are one of those Indiana Jones games on DOS and Crystal Caves, also for DOS. I the first one that I'd really say was my own was Civilization II. I can't imagine a better game to start off with.
I had 9v9 and 6v6 matches with my TF2 team. Otherwise played a couple hours on TF2 pubs, reloaded Fallout3 and got the DLCs which I hadn't had before, and I'm mostly playing through that now. I've also been playing CIV with FFH2 recently but didn't play any this weekend.
X3: Terran Conflict. Im probably modding it more than I'm playing it but it's the thought that counts. Simply the pretties
While 2 looks great as, say, a picture, I'm not sure it works for a game. The units and elements you need to see on the game board don't pop. FWIW, I think it would be cool to have lighting vary from clear, bright areas to misty, dark ones dependent on the magics and evilyness that are prominent in them.
Gaaah, September is nearly here. College football and Elemental beta.. I'm going to go insane with impatience in the interim week.
The cloth map is beautiful, who needs graphics? Looking forward to beta :)
Enabling custom map scripts such as those CIV has would allow the community to do this sort of thing and more.
It looks like "simple but fun" is like Civilization Revolution while the Sophisticated version is the REAL Civilization.
Civilization actually uses a very simplistic resource model and I hope we see something more sophisticated from elemental. Civilization has little strategic value in acquiring more of resource, becuase one is enough to fuel all production demands, any extras are only useful for
I like #1 but I have to agree with Kael that it's probably a bit too involved. What I'm thinking is that resources are handled collectively across the kingdom. So that the iron mine in city A contributes +10 iron/turn to the national stock. Then the blacksmith in city B takes -5 iron/turn and produces +5 swords/turn from and to the national stock. Cities A and B both have warehouses increasing the total capacity of the national stockpile. Say there are a
The first games I have strong memories of are the Crystal Caves series for DOS, also DOOM :D Getting into more serious games, Civilization II when I was 7ish then Starcraft, Diablo II, Age of Empires II and it sort of just exploded into the gamer that I am now.
There are two cases in which I've done it, Starcraft and NWN: Hordes of the Underdark. Both of which were/are games I bought, but the disks went missing or got too scratched up, respectively. I wish I had held on to my original SC CD key now that they have their digitial backup service :/
Hey, I've been having lots of fun playing Demigod MP :) But yeah, TBS is better single player I think, I've never even had the desire to bring my CIV games online. I'll write an AAR about them to share, but I don't want to have to have wait for someone else to play out their turn, that game takes long enough as it is :p
Very much looking forward to trying out Beta 0 and helping out int he development progress. Seeing as I'm a big fan of Dwarf Fortress, which has no graphics and is in "pre-alpha" I think I can definitely handle "just" having a colorful map with icons :p *pre-order* With this and the two Blizzard titles coming up I've got so many games I'm following right now :/
