First, read the instruction manual. Second, look at the controls. That should give you a basic idea of how to play. Next, play the single player skirmishes and tournaments until you can beat hard AI 100% of the time. There, you're ready.
I would go so far as to say DG is one of the best balanced games out of the box I have played, ever. It's not 100% perfect, but no game ever is.
I see you've never played Guilty Gear or Guild Wars(during it's prime... sadly, Guild Wars has... changed).

Regulus can kill and then some, but he can't control a map for shit. And when the game comes down to map control, it shows just how weak he can be.
That is most certainly true. Plenty of people find that out the hard way against me. 'Oh, that enemy teleporting in shouldn't be too hard, I should be able to handle hi---OMGWTFGANGRAPE' Erebus' best strength is easily teleporting in with a full army right on top of someone who doesn't know what he has coming.
I suggest forcing the game to run at lowered settings if the simspeed drops to a level below 0.
In case you havn't noticed, everyone has.
Not unless I was either REALLY confident that I wouldn't need to use it for a while(and could afford that freaking huge mana cost), or there were enemies at my citadel.
The creeps you get should be solely for powering up your own demigod. Something like summoning Ritualists and they buff you up for certain periods of time, as you lvl up the skill points, they buff you more and more. The Oak is basically like that and it works, i believe other generals should as well.
Play Guild Wars much?
As I said, I'm biased on the issue. In most cases, kill the minion once, and they won't be summoning them back, unless they keep the idol like I do(no reason to keep the archer idol, those things never die, that's what makes buying the priests such a good investment, and keeping the priest idol is important, as they do have a tendancy to get hit). Also, the generals already start out fairly slow as it is, and minions aren't exactly the hottest thing in the world until you can get enough
Correction, Erebus doesn't have the creep clearing abilities of many generals either. Mist isn't exacly a solid investment short of curing venom, and his autoattack leaves a hell of a lot to be desired.

On one hand, I like it. Fixes an obvious problem... 6 extra minions is a bit of a problem. However, on the other, I buy Archers and priests at the start of the game that way. I mean, I guess that it's not a big loss, but I always thought that it would be better if the minions died when you bought the higher level idol. But then again, that caters to how I play.
Eh... that combo's overexaggerated. It's freaking awesome when it does work, but the mana cost is insane, especially with the infamous Erebus nerf. Even with Vlemish, you're still go through a massive amount of mana incredibly quickly. You're pretty much giving up everything for that one assault. You won't be consolidating anything after something like that, and that's really important in Demigod, where the territory is just as important as the guy standing on it.
Here's my number one: When someone triest to coordinate a team, you either do it, or refute it with a legitimate argument and suggest an alternative.
How about we nerf mines in a way so that they're slower, but buff snipe so that the arrow passes through every enemy on its path to its target(doing less damage to enemies that aren't the target, of course)? Regulus gets a useful AoE, and mines become less OMGWTFSUPERSPIKEOFDEATH. Not to mention they can be used more as traps and less like grenades.
Snipe makes no difference against feeders. If the DG was going to die anyway, Snipe is a waste. Snipe is good against players who know what they're doing, and try to escape. Or, at least, they think they're escaping.
I lol'd at god plate. Then I began to cry... then cut myself. You could spend that gold on so many things that aren't shit...
Regulus' survivability at close range is so limited that it wouldn't matter. His mines can only hit so many nightwalkers at once. Erebus shouldn't have too much trouble taking down Regulus if he actually manages to get close(of course, getting close is the issue).
Most of my Pantheon games end up taking place on Crucible. I don't play Pantheon anymore.
Crucible is the biggest and most obvious bug in Demigod.
Firstly, as i started playing my first round in single player tournament, I found the item selection was a little overwhelming (and still slightly do) only because theres just so many things to take into consideration. I would approve of making Regulus bright and glowing so that I could actually see him when he's hiding behind a rook. I've died to that too many times... you never see Reggie hiding in there until it's too late.
