I have begun to realize the fundamental flaw with forums is that we all respond faster and in greater number than it is realistic to expect from the developers of the game.
That's an organizational and communications issue, not a fundamental problem. One big difference between the two was when WOM was in the works it seems like the focus was on creating an awesome engine. The excitement coming out from the company was on the amazing features of the engine and how easy it was to mod. So in effect when WOM was released we got this amazing engine, but it wasn't a very polished game. With FE they have the engine and now the focus seems to be on a really solid game. There's a spell that makes you immune to counter attacks. Cast that, then go to town.
Your sovereign has to be the one that completes this quest. Other champions can do the steps up to the assembly, but your sovereign has to be the one to forge them all together.
I've confirmed this now. My sovereign had 85 experience while sitting in a city, one of his champions with an army started/won a fight, then he had 91 or so exp afterwards. You can check this yourself. All your people have exp bars you can monitor. So you can sit in the seat of your empire and send out champions to do your bidding.

I agree. The ability should be a normal AE spell. Not the entire map.
I've noticed several times that my sovereign has leveled up through combat of his champions. Not sure why. Also you can gain books that give experience in the wild. These can be traded.
