Why does the AI ships suddenly get so hard? in Galactic Civilizations II GalCiv2 Forums

Well first thx for a great game,, but! ( and this is proberly cause of my noob skills) Im gaming along, everything is going fine my ships are owning then suddenly enemy fleets consisiting of 3 small ships gets like 80 total in weapon power, and if i do what i can i get max like 15,, how does the ai do it? I cant see anything special on the ais ship when i go into detailed watch mode.
