I concour. With all the "stuff" being poured into other aspects of the game, keeping combat at the same level as GC2 seems a bit of a waste.

But in any case, some ideas on the subject (since I was the one to originally think of it): Repeatedly using a single mana type in an area should slowly alter the terrein in that area. If you use too much fire the land gets burnt, if you use too much water it freezes, and so on.
