Well, I just mean that one route on the tech tree isn't consistenly superior to pursue with greater riggor than other parts. Otherwise a rational player who plays to win will always focus more on the route that yields better results.
Oh. Well, that clears things up a great deal. I was envisioning a system in which it didn't matter if you got the tech you were hoping for, becuase all the techs were "worth" about the same.......... ahh well......

Hmmm. I like the general idea, but again the chance element needs some tweaking.
if hidden techs are common enough, then you can predictably get a certain amount each game with minimal deviation, and your concern won't be an issue.
That's assuming all hidden techs are the same. Getting a lot of weak techs is equivalent to getting a lack of big (or any) techs.
Anyone more ideas? Thoughts? Problems? Weaknesses? Adulation?
Interesting....... never seen anything remotely like it before so I'm not quite sure what effect it would have, but I see no problems with it and like the idea. Flexible research w/o RNG overload!
I don't like the idea of 'choosing' techs, since this kiind of undermines the whole idea of tech researching.
Again?! I've been through this argument multiple times, and it always boils down to the idea that a scientist does not know what (s)he is researching beforehand (everyone who gets involved with this always brings up the example of the microwave). Now, I am not technically a scientist yet, but I have done some research of my own and 90% of the time you get something prett
I think a lot could be learned from Master of Orion. I like the idea of researching an AREA of tech and when a milestone in that area is reached, a screen pops up and the player can choose the breakthru they want to have just uncovered. When researching a given area of tech (warfare, civilization, magic, diplomacy, etc.) they player would know the odds of a particular tech being available once that milestone is reached. In addition, some very rare technologies might pop

Banned for preemptive slapping. Now I'm going to have to slap everybpdu on the thread to keep from getting slapped myself.
in this case, the military are good. they are simple, yes, but they generally want to save everyone. Whereas the scientists have proven multiple times that they think they know better and go off doing their own things, regardless of the consequences for the rest of the crew.
Exactly. And as an aspiring scientist myself I find the anti-intellectual stuff very irritating: the tired old evil genius cliche is in desperate need of a reworking, and portrayals like in SGU are
Huh? If you mean you would make up cities and points of interest in the lands that Tolkien never laid out in any detail (south and east), I don't think that's a good idea. Personally I wouldn't really mind, but I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would object to it.
With a massive fan following like Tolkein's, you're gonna tick off people whatever you do. I just think it would be best to tick them off in a way that looks good and makes the game the most enjoyable.</
