I also would find it interesting for things the channeler cares deeply about or spends a lot of energy on to get some essence of their own: say, if you use a specific sword in a lot of battles or do a lot of things with a specific unit or build a lot of crap in a specific town then some of your essence gets stored there (making the whatever-it-is stronger, but costing you a tad (or a lot) if you lose/kill it).
