Are there any good strategy guides for this game? I remember reading a guide about a year ago for the Original version of the game, and it helped me a lot. I can't find it anymore, though.

The problem is, I don't remember any good ways to play. My specific question is, what's generally a good way to start off? If you could give your personal opinions, or even point me to a good newbie strategy guide, I'd be eternally grateful.

I prefer maps with multiple stars, but I also want the map to balance the players out. An example would be a map with three stars and nine players, and the players are spread out in a fashion that there are three players per star. I've been looking at the maps that came with the game, but I only saw maps where all players were located in just one star or there were 5 stars; and it put five players in one star and another 5 in a second star and left the other three stars empty.

Unless, of course, it really meant to say to cover 75% of the map with your culture; then that would make sense. I'm still confused, because I've already covered 75% of the map with my culture. How would I go about

Yes, it should be in the non-hostile part of the tech tree. The name of the tech tree is dependent on race, of course. It should be pretty early in the tech tree.
