I'm re-reposting this as the forum ate my original post If a mod deleted my post, please note: I hardy see how mine is a troll post. I use logic to deconstruct an attitude I see a lot here. I even assume there is an 8.5 game within. I express my wish that the game is finally patched to playable goodness. There is no name calling nor personal attacks in the post. If this post is deleted as well, please send me a PM explaining your reasons. T

I'm reposting this reply from another thread. It seems to me that most of the rationalizations of the horrible release state of Elemental take the form of, 'wait 2 - 4 - 6 months and it will be a great game' or 'sure, it needs a few patches, but when it gets them, move over Civ 5!'. One would think it is like a mathematical formula, 'wait 6 months = great game', like 2+2=4, that absolutely cannot be argued with. Well, I'm gonna argue it. Before I get started, I'
Great talk. I especially found interesting the division of players into 3 groups, Challenge, Sandbox, and Narrative, and how he treated those 3 groups equally, trying to cater to their individual needs and treating their specific concerns as valid ones.

Best subject line ever. I was ready to read some philosophy, turns out it's about the game. :)
The whole thing as is just looks a bit awkward, since I don't see enough visual cues that my unit is really going to move.
Bingo. Civ 4, you get a nice line, showing where every move will stop, and how many turns in all. This is enough to reassure me that the game has understood my instructions and is showing me the path it intends to take, further reassuring me that the game will indeed accomplish the task I set it. If I should worry ab
While we're at it, I ran into an 'interesting' bug with my transport in my last ever game. I sent my transport back to port. It wouldn't go back to port, by which I mean the sea square in front of the port. It insisted on staying 2 squares away. So I click it, it is selected as I see it in the UI, but there is no selection box around the ship. I right click the square in front of the port. The ship *warps* to another square, 3 squares away. I click ag

It was more powerful like that. And brutal. And damming. :)
The dryness of the report makes it all the more brutal. And damming. "Here ya go guys, I did your work for ya."
-Cognitive dissonance. The fanboys. Brad can do no wrong; stop complaining because Stardock will fix it all; Elemental is full of potential and you're just too impatient to see that; it's all my/our/the trolls' fault; etc. Deeply disappointed in the game, arguably more than either of the groups, they try to drown it out with zealotry.
It seems to me that most of these rationaliz

Back on topic, devs, once you've got the MP balanced and you've done 'surgery' on the sandbox game to where you're happy with it, you really, really need to take a look at the campaign. I don't mind that it's short. I don't mind that the story's not the greatest. I don't even mind so much that the player is stuck in a thin corridor and has to do A, B, and C to go farther. What I do mind, however, is for a 'glorified tutorial', it doesn't explain half the game, and the
It's more than annoying, it's just bad, period, to have these kinds of fail states with no feedback. Like the 'can't build within 5 squares of another city' thing. It's never explained, there is no indication that the other city is 'encroaching' on your territory, suddenly you click on your city and you can't build anything. I wouldn't be surprised if there were 'bug reports' on this issue in this very forum.

Didn't find a thread, sorry if already covered: I tried everything to select the city, no go, it insists on selecting the caravan. Anybody else seen this?
Very interesting read. For me, the question is, can the game be patched up and fixed. Brad has talked about 'surgery' being needed, I am in complete agreement. And I agree that the lack of a unified direction/vision is quite evident, and has hurt the release. It *may* be that the game cannot be patched up, they could get the various systems already in place to play nice with each other and better relate to each other, but would that result in a fun, engaging game?&nb
When do units move at the beginning?
Actually, they don't, it just looks like they do. 1. Give a long move order. 2. End turn. 3. End turn again. Your guy will not move. 4. End turn again. Now you see him move. The game is actually moving everybody who hasn't moved, then ending the turn, but it looks like they are moving at the beginning since the movement follows the click
One part of the review really struck me though, and kind of opened my eyes, where he talks about the graphics, animations, spell effects, and battle sounds. He's right, they are really not up to snuff. My Fire Giant is moonwalking to the next square, this is sub-par. One little guy runs over to one side of the square, starts whacking, then runs over to the other side and whacks some more, while 7 other guys look on. I hate to admit it, but that doesn't cut it. He
Yeah, the totality of that mea culpa should be stickied, at the top of the forum. It's only fair to your customers who are dissatisfied with the game, let them know their voices have been heard.
Your whole argument is based on the idea that in 6 months the game will be 100% fun and playable, with issues addressed, rebalancing, etc etc. That's an awfully big assumption, even given the best goodwill and 'desire to do right' in the world.
I am enjoying Elemental. I'm lucky enough to have only had 1 CTD since I installed it. However, I think it is quite clear that the game does not rise to the standards of the Gamer's Bill Of Rights. I will just take one example, illustrated in Tom Chick's game diary: http://fidgit.com/archives/2010/08/elemental_hey_whered_that_come.php "Your level can be raised..." And th
Hi kryo, Thanks for the response. It's too late for the debug as I didn't know the procedure. I haven't had it happen since then, but I do have the old save game, I'll load it up and see what happens.
