Problem was caused by buggy RAM, that was specified to run at 1600MHz. After reducing the mem speed the gfx freezes disappeared.

somehow I read over the .err part in the "how to report" post :-| well here is the file: http://pastebin.com/download.php?i=sPaUhSMa driver version: catalyst 10.8 Thank you!
didn't find the zip file, maybe because elemental did not really crash, instead the gpu freeze was catched by the ati tool the problem can be reproduced
I encountered a GPU freeze when zooming in and out from the map often. The game freezes up for a few seconds, then VPU Recover from ATI says that the gfx card did no longer respond so it has been resetted. Without VPU Recover, this would be a crash bug. I am using Win XP 32bit SP3, gfx card ATI Radeon HD 3870 (Sapphire Ultimate Edition) Save game: http://www.sendspace.com/file/u4il4t DxDiag: http://www.sendspace.com/file/7fxuzb VP
