I always find myself having to slow the game pace, via lowering tech and production speeds, to have huge and even large maps play with any sense of a challenge. The tech and production rates on normal are, IMO, too fast for these larger maps and leaves the AI factions at a significant disadvantage.
Had I not bought FE with a 66% discount, I too would be annoyed at having to pay for LH.
