I have DA and I was thinking about buying TAO but reading about some of the AI bugs kind of scares me away from it. From reading here it seems like people have problems with the AI not expanding properly and not building anything on their planets? Is this a widespread issue or does it seem to only happen with certain combinations of settings? I haven't seen a lot of posts about it here so I was wondering.

I tried out the b6 release candidate and it seems to work good. One thing is that the two added options appear as "String Not Found" instead of the appropriate text for the new options. I deactivated both "string not found" options and my framerates are back to normal .
It looks like we both have laptops with integrated Intel cards.
I don't want to hold up patch releases or anything but for the people that get MIXEDVP mode to work, they still have graphical problems. In MIXEDVP mode there are missing stars and other graphics.
In Dark Avatar 1.5 I get between 20-35 frames per second depending on whats going on.
The changes in the beta patch have still not increased framerates with my Intel 82855. It is still getting 3 fps with ships on the screen and the mixed mode doesn't work at all. However, I am not expecting you guys to support every low end card. For the moment until I get a better system to play on I will stick to Dread Lords.
Hey Braddock, so when you use the MIXED mode is there still graphical glitches, like missing stars and stuff?
Ok, I tried the beta 5e by starting it directly. It gets 3 fps still. The debug file says something like this: Debug Message: Failed to find a device that can support hw vp mode. Trying mixed vp. Debug Message: Failed to find a device that can support mixed vp mode. Trying sw vp. So the Intel laptop cards are pretty useless I guess. *EDIT* I just want to mention that I am not going to be surprised if you can't improve the framerates for the 1% of your
I just tried the beta 5E build and started it with a MIXEDVP shortcut and it goes to a black screen at startup just as before. **Edit** I found this website WWW Link that shows that my video card doesn't support Pixel Shaders 1.0-2.0, but does support Vertex Shaders 1.0-3.0. I have no idea if that information is useful o
GeneralEtrius, We want to nail down this performance bug with the older cards before we release 1.6. kholdstayr, I know that the HARDWAREVP parameter didn't work, but does it work if you use the MIXEDVP parameter? I just tried the MIXEDVP setting. It does the same thing that HARDWAREVP does, causes a black screen and gives the same debug.err message as th
I tried out the updated Beta 5 for the software vp fix and it didn't provide me with increased frame rates.
CariElf, hw vp worked for me! 50fps when the three starting ships are onscreen; ten times what I was getting before. I didn't notice any graphic weirdness, but I didn't have the game running very long. Do you want the debug file? That's awesome, at least its been figured out now. Maybe you should also post in the official Beta 5 thread at thats pinned at the top of the forum here: https://forums.galc
Hmmm, seems the game really doesnt like being minimized Maybe its just my system, anyone else have problems? It doesnt crash every time, but sometimes it does when I try to restore the game from being minimized. It does it when the game has gone back into fullscreen and is getting focus again.<br
It might. Try setting your Specular Intensity to 0 on the video tab of the options screen and see what happens. I've turned off the ambient and specular light settings and they don't improve anything. The ships are still reflective though even with the specular light setting turned off. I know that the ships are obviously designed to look metallic so they have a reflec
Ok, I'll continue to monitor this thread next week to see if anything comes up. I wonder if the slowdown has something to do with lighting and reflective effects on the ships? All the planets and asteroids and stuff just kind of have a brightness but not really a shadow casting lighting effect on them, but the ships are all bright from the star light and have shadows and look reflective.
I tried out the HARDWAREVP trick and the game won't even get to the main menu screen. It just goes black right when you start it and it won't do anything. The debug.err file says something like this towards the end: Using multilsample setting: D3DMULTISAMPLE_NONE Could not create the render device. Initialize Direct3d Failed.
I forgot to mention that using full screen mode doesn't increase my frame rates.
I just wanted to update in here that framerate problems I am having in this thread https://forums.galciv2.com/?forumid=421&aid=153449 go away if I go into the ship design screen. The frame rate problems only seem to be present on the main map screen when ships are shown on the screen.
Ok, one more development on the frame rate front. If I go into the ship designer my framerates jump back up to normal. I find this a bit odd since the ship designer doesn't effect the frame rates but rendering ships on the main game screen seems to give me the slow downs. Braddock, do you get a more normal framerate when you go into the ship designer screen?
Hey, I'm curious, what are your system specs Tral?
I am wondering is this Beta 5 different from the Beta 5 link you updated on 5/22 in your thread 1.6 Beta 4 thread here https://forums.galciv2.com/?forumid=421&aid=152947 ? If it is, where is it available? I am not seeing on Stardock? *** EDIT **** I found it and got it from Stardock. Anyway, it doesn't improve the framerate problems that I was mentioning in my thread .
Hi Cari, thanks for the reply. As I stated earlier, I actually did turn off every graphics feature to test to see if I would get improved framerates but this did not work. I disabled every texture feature, cranked the starfield and galaxy effects sliders down to 0, disabled bump mapping, and also disabled point sprites as you mentioned. Doing all of the above doesn't gain a single frame per second. Like I said there seems to be something going on with ships. Say I start a new game and all t
Here is my debug.err using the 1.5 release (non-beta) version that gets ok framerates: Debug Message: Version v1.50x3 Dark Avatar last updated on: Mon Mar 12 18:37:34 2007 Debug Message: Checking DX Version. Ok, here is my debug.err with me trying to use the 1.6 beta. Anyway, once again yes my system specs are low, as the debug.err file indicates but the game is completely playable when I am not using any of the betas. My graphics drivers are from 2006 but if you go to the Intel website that is the latest driver that is available. Debug Message: Version v1.6 beta 5 Dark Avatar test 2 last updated on: Mon May 21 16:54:03 2007 Debug Message: Checking DX Version. Debug Mes
With the latest Dark Avatar 1.5 (release version) I get the same framerates that I get with Dreadlords. However, if I use a beta version my framerates drop by roughly 75%. It doesn't matter if I use the 1.59.096 beta or the 1.6 b5 test 2 beta available from this forum. I guess I am one of the people who doesn't get increases with the new graphics engine. I am confused by the drop in framerates with the 1.59.096 beta though. Is there any differences graphics wise with the 1.59 beta
