A friend brought over the DvD's of all 6 seasons so I'm having a B5 marathon To answer my own question, yes, there was a "scout" ship, called the Explorer class, they had an episode featuring it in Season 2, "A Distant Star". Not really a scout I guess, as its huge and designed to explore the rim and build jumpgates. Bab

heh, I haven't even played the Dread Lords campaign yet. Is it worth playing at all or should I continue to give it a "pass"?
My econ suffers also, so I: 1. Don't start a war unless I've built up an ample "war chest" of funds. If most of my planets are at max pop (and they usually are) I'll raise taxes - temporarily - and maximize my treasury as best I can prior to attacking. of course, so far I've managed to select when I want to go to war. This has also got me thinking twice about conquering minor planets nearby or within my influence; not only can they trade me tech for a good por
I wasn't able to buy a planet (yet), but I intimidated an enemy's ally into a truce, and one of the conditions was them giving me a planet (and all their $$$, influence, techs, and a few ships ). It was pretty hilarious, two other civilizations (allies) declared war on me one turn, then the next negotiated and almost promised me their firstborn not to war on 'em, hehe
Try not to raise taxes above 35%, 40% tops (and that's still too high). Lower productivity instead, then hunt for the reasons you're not getting that good income. Raising taxes too high is a downward spiral, people get unhappy, their productivity lowers, you collect fewer taxes . . . it just gets worse & worse. My rule of thumb is to build minimum 1 trade building for Class 5/6 or below (sometimes two), and 2-3 for above that (sometimes as many as 3-5 on the really plum planets of Clas
Well, Civ2 had the Encroachment warning, "Get away from my city or its War", I think that for all save freighters it should be employed, unless that race is your ally (again, just like Civ). Starbases don't count IMO. Of course that should count for space that is only X parsecs / distance from your planets and not occluded by the fog of war (I can't think of an instance where space near a planet isn't visible, but you never know . . . )
When I saw the music folder and the mp3's, I hoped I could simply add to them and it'd play them in rotation, ala Oblivion's method . . . .I hope they add this feature in the near future. I like the stock music, I just agree, it gets repetitive. I guess I can just use the win media to play stuff in the background. One of my favorites I'll play is the main theme from I,Robot by Beltrami
We've had a number of these conversations in the past, a couple started by ShuShu (wonder where he is anyway) that have been very interesting. I would say that if anything has been learned, it's never say never. But given that, I still think the most efficient way to deal with a technologically superior opponent is with the swarm. If you're inferior it's harder to match yo
I stock my freighters up with Sensors, that way while they're doing their little shuffle between planets they're also illuminating parts of the map. That's a nifty idea Thanks!
Just phooling around and came up with these ships. I'm usually not real big on anthropomorphic stuff, preferring functional ships like Bab5's or Battlestar Galactica. When I get some time maybe I can sit down, spend hours and make some real killers Pegasus Scorpion (Dreadnaught class) <a href="http://members.cox.net/psimons
It'd be nice to save on the investment in a Starbase, otherwise . . . I think they moved Bab5 once, but it was a dangerous and difficult endeavor
It affects your race's "friskiness". Low approval = lower birthrate.
I don't know about borders (reminds me of the "Frontier" in The Last Starfighter) but what bugs me is the ability to build starbase on enemy (or even "friendly") territory. I think starbase construction should be limited to either your own space or "unclaimed" space. Cultural domination would still be a viable option although it'd probably take some tweaking of the Influence effect so you could construct Influencers along an enemy's cultural border / influence / whatever its called <im
As an avid computer gamer and programmer I empathize and agree with Frogboy's position. I was commenting lately to a friend about the dearth of great singleplayer games. Every game coming out - multiplayer - and I finally retreated to game review boards to read articles and see which amongst the monthly crop featured the best singleplayer gameplay. Many of them focus on MP, then tack on an often incoherent or tedious linear story/campaign for the SP. The reason being is that I devote m
I find this part of the game tedious also. I'm still a starbase nut, I build tons of them, mostly Econ for planetary groups or Influence to flip neighbors. A few Military ones at galactic "choke points". When the turn comes and seven or more of new constructor messages cue up I sigh. I like the Starbase Governor idea. It does say (or I thought I read it somewhere) that can you automate ships coming out of a planet to muster at rally points, but so far I've yet to find it or figu
A few comments 1. I'm experiencing a bug where if I construct custom ships they turn invisible. Its not all of them; I customized the "Earth President's" model for fast survey with no problems; however a customized fast colonizer vanished. I didn't see this bug mentioned above so posted. It doesn't prevent you from moving the ship around or otherwise affect it adversely, its just invisible (stealth! <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Tongue.gif" border=0 ALIG
I'm a HUGE fan of Bab5 and love the screenshots. I hope you keeping working on the mod, and that its a labor of love. I'm sure I'll check out the Trek one too, but while I've been a Trekkie since I was a kid, it was Bab5 that stole my heart & soul.
Economy Starbses don't increase the ammount of money you get (apart from the trade modules increasing the trade routes), they increase the Military, Social and Research production of your worlds within their range. That's incorrect. That's one benefit among many. Yes, they (supposedly) increase trade revenue, and you can also upgrade their scanne
I haven't gotten "filthy" rich (the most I've seen is about 150K ), I just need all those bucks to support the massive warfleets I like to pound the Yor with. . I didn't win at Challenging until I read other posts and adopted these strategies. Of course, there's a lot of different ways and strategies to win. So far I'm 5-2 using these tactics. Some games I get put in the middle of two or three hostile alie
My old system (Gateway) had a incredibly wimpy 160W PSU. Then when I upgraded to a 350W to support the Nvidia 6800AGP board, it generated enough heat to crash my computer whenever I loaded up a graphics-intensive game. ($30 more smackers for an Arctic Cooler ducted GPU heatsink). As you can damage a GPU board with a wimpy PSU I'd invest in a decent one (that's 300W (at least)and quality amperage), m'self.
Oh, I like Starbases, too, but they're not real good defensively in the later stages of the game. Use them for their benefits, and if you really value them, you have to park some ships nearby and watch them like a hawk (at least, the ones on the Frontier or near your enemy). I use Econ bases a lot, also. I only put Military ones in "strategic" points or even near valuable galactic resource mining operations, to give my ships an edge in defending them.
I'm a newbie so take this advice with a grain of salt. I am playing huge & gigantic galaxy, Challenging, random races, random race AI. You didn't say what you're playing, so if its like masochistic or something, skip my post The 1st stage of the game is Expansion. You gotta get out there and find the cherries (artifacts), resources, and planets. I always research in this order:
I like building starbases, so here's the Starbase Wishlist. Posted some in another thread but belongs here, really. 1. Auto-Warning for Starbases: Like the Ship Guard selection, if an enemy ship appears within the base's scanning range it warns the player at the start of the turn (appears along with other start-of-turn messages). Naturally, the more one invests in the base's scanners, the better range it has. 2. Either expand Cultural bases, or make an entirely new type of
Docking ships would be nice. Not just to help out Starbases, but, hey, the crew's gotta have a space beer once in a while. If it was me, and dockable-bases were a "go", I'd either make them a part of cultural bases or a type entirely of their own (with their own tech tree). I was complaining in another thread about the uselessness of starbases in the later stages of the game, how they can easily get blown away by any small fleet, how they need better tech, etc, so on.
There's really no lazy "out" here. If you're willing to invest in a decent midrange GPU you'll need a good PSU. A 300-400W won't be that expensive, given everyone is looking at 500-700 (or more) these days. You get what you pay for though. Wattage is not the way to select good PSU's, stability and features is (myself, I like modular cabling). A good guide: PSU 101 It's really not that hai
