Is there a way to reduce the number of crashes when trying to save a game? Like should I save at the end of a turn? I've been having horrible luck with crashing when trying to save a game. Tried auto-save but couldn't load the only auto-saved game I tried to load so turned that off. Suggestions appreciated.

Twice tonight I've had the game crash when I tried to save. The game was playing fine. I've had crashes before but this looks different.
Thanks for the input
Is there a penalty for having a large number of cities? Should you settle cities everywhere, even at less optimal city sites?
Is there a list of key board commands that aren't listed in the manual? I've seen several refwerences to these unlisted key board commands.
The save files show how long you played. When I start a game it might last 30-40 minutes, occassionally longer, before a reboot. After that it might be all day, 7-8 hours. I was playing a game tonight into maybe 6 hours where the IBT was good but the screen drag sucked. Did the same save and close the program, worked great.
The only problem I've had with the save, quit, reload method of getting rid of IBT lag is occassionally Steam will hang up. Then you use the old XP standby of Ctl-Alt-Del to kill the FE program, usually second from the top. XP has some advantages!
