I like the idea of mundane tech but very very limited. I don't want steampunk, but certainly making better armors and weapons I would like to see improvements. Making magic weapons and armor should require the ability to make decent weapons and armor before they are made magical. (more hybridization between different tech trees = great imo)
Quoting kryo, reply 7 Either way, the big issue is getting the pathing to handle these sorts of "shortcuts" effectively and efficiently.I thought that was why we had Cari_Elf? Of course, I favour player-constructed gates (as described in the original thead), since I oppose any kind of multi-layering of the game map, because my own pathfinding is worthless.
<

Instead of instant teleportation, how about Wheel of Time type Waygates for faster travel. this could be really cool because it could implement the "other dimension" quality of Arcanus and Myrorr from MoM, but instead of an entire other plane it could jsut be a method of quick travel. So you could access "the Ways" thru random towers scattered around the landscape. Towers would initially be guarded by fairly powerful creatures so they couldnt be used for zerg rushes, you would have to

So maybe your "tech tree" only shows the next spell down that line that you can research, and maybe like MoM you can preselect SOME of what will appear in the tree at higher levels but some of it will be random. VERY good idea. This could really be interesting if multiple school spells are in the tech tree. You could get out several levels in one school and have an optional spell that you COULD learn but also required a certain level of knowledge from one or more other schools! <

Reply to Magic system? in WOM Ideas

I really like PigeonPigeon's idea. Seems very clean and would give you a ton of flexibility. I would also like to some spells that cannot be researched, but can only be found out in the world. It would be interesting if you started out a fire mage and then found a powerful earth spell that caused you to switch - or you could trade the spell you found to an earth mage player to improve relations and maybe get a fire spell in return. It would be nice to have some mixed school varieties

I am guessing that there will be "tech" trees both for magic systems as well as mundane weaponry, armor, assault engines, fortifications, etc. The truly exciting (I think) will be seeing blending of tech trees such as having a certain level of ability with sword making, and a certain level of ability with fire magic being able to make a flaming sword, etc.

I see that there are going to be five realms of magic - Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Life (what, no Death?) Are players going to be confined to one realm or can they opt for the jack of all trades, master of none? Are there going to be dozens of spells available from each school, with only the higher level spells available to those dedicated only to that school? I am obviously thinking along MOM lines, or are "spells" going to be designed by the player so that there is essenti
