My most recent game, I noticed this same problem. Had one 2 Empire factions that actively expanded, and declared war on me (I was Kingdom) but the other kingdom faction (Altar, my next door neighbor) petered out after building a couple of cities, and then after I killed the 2 empie factions, I started exploring the map, and all I ran into were minor civs, this was in an 8-faction game, mind you, and all the others never seemed to expand....

For those of you with complaints about the admittedly lousy magic damage in vanilla, even 1.07, check out Heavenfall's bugfix mod - https://forums.elementalgame.com/395013 which makes playing casters worth it for me. I probably shouldn't chime in here, as I can tell by reading that most of you are far more experienced powergamers than me, but I also had a sense of overwhelming doom my first several games. (Many!) I'm hardly an expert, but my experiences to date have shown that male children should be married off to another faction, as this nets you the wife, who will show up in your capitol as a controllable champion. Marrying your female children off loses you that female, she joins the other factions, but HER children MAY choose to rejoin your faction, just as your son's children may desert you for the other grampa. To all those with perfectly understandable concerns about magic's lack of oomph, I recommend Heavenfall's Bugfix mod, available for 1.07 with Icecrown's effect improvements. I keep reading all these complaints, but in my armies my mages are the heavy hitters, and the soldiers are only there in case of an unexpected calamity, like a massive numbers imbalance. I've had the goody hut unresponsive thing several times, and was able to get it to work by making sure my sovereign HAD THE EGG IN HIS INVENTORY when I went back to the hut. The most recent time I did it, hero 2 actually got the quest, and got the egg, but I had to trade it to the Sov to complete. Didn't matter that when I went back, hero 2 was in the stack with the egg, had to actually give it to the sov to complete. Try it.

Allow me to remind everyone that the thread starter is NOT the one who said he was playing a pirate copy, it was a follow up poster. I myself am having this same issue, because I used the fan-made .exe patch to correct the out-of-memory errors, and everything was great. This occurred to me as well. Turns out I had one party engaged in combat off screen, and it wouldn't advance the turn until I watched the little auto-combat animation play, and it wouldn't play until I had the chars on screen. Click through all your army icons until you find the one that's killing somebody, once you see the animation play out, you should be able to advance to the next turn.
