In terms of female children, I think a more modern view on what they can do is more fitting. While the setting is in a fantasy realm, we don't need to get bogged down with medieval thinking. I'd be perfectly fine in having daughters become powerful mages, shieldmaidens or skillful overseers. Though I don't know how Stardock's vision of the lore and setting would dictate female roles, I think giving them some sort of unique job/skill over males would make it a more meaningful and diffi

Nice survey, it touches on a bunch of important aspects of child care in a monarchy type government. I'd say give the player maximum control since he is, in effect, the all-powerful ruler that decides everything. Though one thing I'd like to see is that children have their own preferences on what they want to do. There are a few ways to implement their wants. Maybe this can be "hidden" in their stats: High intelligence will have them excel at intellectual persuits li

For pay custom maps and over ten million copies sold easily will ensure that. It'll be a black hole of money for anyone who wants to play it (and not just pirate it). And it will probably take them some time to make back everything used in development. I mean, they've been

Well, I really did not aim to make a profound and sweeping statement that Blizzard is doing everything right nor that Starcraft 2 is a holy project of divine excellence. My phrasing of "perfect example" was probably too generic in regards to that project. I wanted to point out that a game with a longer than normal development phase has the luxury of large changes to gameplay/technology that might normally not have been done in a "normal" development timeframe. I just keep hearing how the

That trailer looks pretty good. I've always liked the first Tropico. I probably wont pre-order, but I'll definately have a look at the reviews for this game to decide I will pick it up. The fact that it's available on impulse is a big plus. [e digicons]:D[/e] Viva El Presidente!
Yeah I was perhaps hoping to have various materials be found on the map itself,They already will be. All resources will appear on the map, and you will need to mine them to build stuff with them. I do not, however, like the idea of the resources you control affecting the techs you get: to RNGish, and doesn't leave room for techs that don't directly tie into resouces. Plus, what happens if you lose a resource?
I wa

Yeah I was perhaps hoping to have various materials be found on the map itself, making protecting various deposits to be more important. But again there's the question of balance since everything's randomly generated. I guess a minimum distance can be put in. Materials of value >= some value must be at least X tiles distant to starting location. They could also be guarded by creatures. Or going back to the finite and rare materials idea, you could have it so you find an ancient bat

Finding an interesting, working way to research techs is difficult for games. You want to keep it simple, yet fun and rewarding. The RPG Evil Islands had an interesting system that might work for Elemental: There you didn't research but you did have schematics for various weapons and types which you put together using different materials. So you find a Short Sword blueprint and you build it using iron. Iron Short Sword is basic and wont be nearly as good as say super rare Adamantium o

There's some great stuff in this thread. As for dungeons, I believe a mixture of randomly generated and fixed encounters would be good. Randomly Generated: You are out scouting and find a mountainside with many caves. As you explore these caves you will have a % chance to encounter one or more enemy groups. The reward will be scaled to the danger. Greater danger, greater reward. I think this is a pretty standard system that works well with keeping things different ever

There's a lot of benefits from taking longer to develop a game using the feedback of a large base of testers. From past experience in Stardock betas I've always felt that the community had a lot of positive, creative things to suggest. There will of course always be suggestions that are unrealistic, but that's part of the fun. No financial pressure to release is a pretty rare thing and it's often said that they never finish their games, they simply stop working on them. As long a
Dear Brad....I am wondering about that picture what you drew. Units will only have weapon/armor/helmet slots? That is _NOT_ enough. What about slots / number of arms for example? Even a simple human should be able to hold a shield and a 1h weapon or a 2h weapon. What if a creature will have 4 or more arms? Also even if we are talking about normal soldiers, and not heroes, there should be an additional slot for leg armors..

From the screenshots I've seen so far and that video, I can say that I'm a fan of the graphics. One trend I've noticed with Strategy games over the years is that as graphics improved and complexity increased, the amount of units on screen has reduced. The Total War series is, nevertheless, an excellent example of some large scale combat. The upcoming Empire: Total War looks inspiring! By keeping the overal graphics simple and compatible with a lot of systems, it frees up a lot of

I agree with Sponge that there's definetly possiblities in making the empire bar a little bit easier to keep track of. Sponge means to have a "Tabbed" view, solar systems each have their own tab, seperate window, so that you can only see the planets in the empire window for the solar system you selected. That would make the list of planets shorter and will give us a better overview. It would make sense since the distances between solar systems is rather long, so there's no nee

The way I play, I take one hostile planet with my fleet and fortify it so that when I move to the next, it can hold off a small attack. With this I mean it has 1 repair facility, 1 or 2 hangars and some Gauss Guns to watch the jump lanes. Now the repair facility is the first thing I build in order to repair my ships as well as the orbital structures should they be under attack. It makes sense, you fleet should only have limited auto-repair functions in enemy territory, relying on repair

One is that the empire tree keeps moving up and down on it's own making it difficult at times to give the orders you want. This has been quite frustrating at times. Also when using the slide bar it sometimes doesn't stay were I slide it to goes back to the original position. Yeah, sometimes happens with me as well. Perhaps a transparent outline around the empire bar might be handy?I don't really want to see the game screen fill up with menus, borders and

There is already a waypoint system in the game - if you hold down shift, you can queue up multiple orders (which can be move orders). I think this is covered in the tutorial, but I could be wrong. My bad Thanks for clearing that up.

11 Replies 6,131 Views

Nah it's not that, but I feel that there's not a whole lot that can be done at this point. Most ships have forward firing angles (excluding flak frig and capitals). This means that they should be static in order to get a clear shot at the enemy. You suggest that there should be more movement within combat, and I agree on that point, but I don't see how that's going to happen. As for missing your point, I got sidetracked in my own wishful thinking as to the benefits of truly making use o
