I would very much be interested in an SD RPG. Unfortunately it would probably end up like GC or Elemental, and end up like as a spreadsheet sim. Now, the leads at SD seem to have recognized that they lack some story telling/character development, and have hired some folks to cover those deficiency. Even with that though, I worry that we'd wind up with DnD, just table lookups. I quit playing DnD about my freshman year in HS, and went to Champions Fantasy hero (Champ
despite my admiration for gc2 and all the hours i've given it, i don't think it's fair to say i really love it. the game just has no atmosphere and the visual style is too cartoony. you never feel that you're exploring the infinite wonder of the cosmos; there's no scientific believability OR imagination. neither is there any sense of dread or unknown at the prospect of war with an alien race. there are too many aliens that look li

I am getting sick and tired of ports; games designed for consoles, and PC's. It seems that every game I've played that has been developed as a port has been gutted to work on the console. I've said it many a time, consoles might look like a Porsche, but you open up the engine compartment and you find some 2-cycle, 10 horse power engine from a lawnmower. It seems to me, that most innovation is going to come out of the middle market. Companies tend

I am beginning to wonder if we aren't looking at units in Elemental slightly improperly? Currently, each icon on the map, in a squad of 1 to 10 pieces, is regarded and treated as a group of 1 to 10 individuals. This kind of got me thinking back to strategy board games, and that Elemental is slightly more abstract in it's tactical implementation. This also got me thinking about, "why even are all 10 people in my squad getting a chance to attack?" So, based on my ab
Quoting Derek Paxton, reply 67 From a flavor perspective its a really interesting idea. From a function perspecitve its much more complex than it needs to be. Integrating quests into the tech tree keeps the existing known mechanics (design consistency), doesnt require new ui, cause player confusion and effectively accomplishes the same goal (allows the player access to greater quests based on how m

I wouldn't even need this so much. I'd prefer some thing more along the lines of A Sawmill (wood cutting camp) must be built on or next to forest tiles. The amount of forest tiles one can fit under the, "Area," of the saw mill placement determines the materials produced. In other words, a player needs to work the tiles with a specific job inorder to produce city/empire usable materials. I'd also expect Old Growth to be surrounded b

Scary. Half those games I don't like and many others I couldn't finish because I became bored with them. The only reason I finished Fo3 was I had given myself the, "I am going to finish game," mind set, not particluarlly because it was overly spiffy.
You know what I think about "Free to Play"? The old adage "You get what you Pay for!" comes to mind...
This kind of sums it up for me as well. If a company can't give me the developed content for the game out of the box that I just purchased, then it's obviosly a ploy to nickle and dime me to death in an attempt to make my game fun. Also, I really don't like games that pit people against people. To m
I think people are overly nostalgic when it comes to old games. Lets take a game I love more than almost anything, Dark Wizard. Dark Wizard was a tactical and strategy fantasy war game for the Sega CD. There were quest, heroes, monsters, magic items, all that shit. But virtually no challenge and no AI at all. The enemies were all weak, didn't do much to actually win battles, it was fun to create and army and heroes, a

One of the oldest things I keep and can't seem to part with, even though I threw out the disks, is Darklands. I just couldn't toss the manual. The next on my list if probably Emporer of the Fading Suns. I kept the CD and its case even. Shoot, I even threw out MOO 1-3 and MoM.

Well it tends to bore me. The tactical battles (combat) I find rather bland. The whole games seems more like a Total War game with some large differences, and minor grievances than say Civ or MOO or AoW or MoM. One thing to keep in mind though is a budget for a TW game versus the budget for Elemental. I suspect there is a large difference. Items I find in common: Dynasties Advisors/Generals as units Tatcial Battles</
Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic has good terrain. It has elevation, it has cover, and it has movement modifiers. Remember though, Age of Wonder: SM is not only the third iteration of the AoW series, but also has an extremely different focus. As someone recently put it, AoW is designed to get you to tactical combat and to make tactical combat as interesting as possible. Fundamentally, AoW is a series of war games, where as Element

AT RELEASE: E: War of Magic: C (crash city, but it was new and I thought it had potential if Brad could get the good delivered) Civilization V: NA (Didn't buy, not going to. Some philosophical differences though combat looked much improved.) Starcraft 2: A- (liked the story, upgrade/research system, even though the combat feels like a standard RTS to me) <

I may be a bit off base with this idea, but I am getting the impression that Elemental didn't quite turn out the way Frogboy wanted it to. As such, they will still refine the original game, but the want an opportunity to try and get back to an original idea of the way things were envisioned. That's at least the impression I'm getting. It may also be a test to see what their engine can do. Just some speculation.

Supplies, or a lack there of could reduce maximum defense and/or health. I am not sure I'd affect attack, unless they were missile troops. How you would track supplies lines I am not sure. You could create a unit, similar to the caravan, but call it a supply train or some thing, and move it to the unit. The supply train creates a small, "stock," or materials the army uses when it travels. Unless the army is equipped with Pioneer gear, or maybe some thing lik

DC fairly worthless when I play. I some times get a +3 for having impressive captial, etc., but over all, I never spend it. I just use gold. By the time DC is of any consequence, I have a ton of gold any way. If DC is to be used as a resource, then in order to talk to a foreign power, you have to spend some of the captial. If you want a treaty, then you have to spend more. It should be a prerequsite, not another source of income. Every

I see rivers and to a lesser extent, lakes, as indicative of an aspect of Elemental that really bugs me, that you can only, "work," resource tiles. We have land that is green with grass growing. The land has flowers, ferns and trees, yet I can't plant fields of wheat or any other crop. I can only plant on, "fertile," squares, even though by any semblance of observation, your area of influence contains fertile land, or weird magic-barren-alien, terrain like the non-man kingdo

Can't remember. Was that the Microsoft one? I seem to remember playing a WWII themed one from Microsoft after SP. They used facing, arcs of fire, etc. I thought it was pretty good too. One of the things I really enjoyed about SP was its armor, and damage systems system, and the way they did aircraft. I'm surprised no one has copied the system.

Why not base when a unit moves on dex, level, or speed? Didn't the Steel Panther series do some thing like this (I and II, never played the battalion level one)? I can't quite remember that far back. Or no, what they did was alot action points to each unit. If you saved some you could then have opportunity fire or cover fire. Of course they also has suppression, are damage, and all sorts of goodies. I don't think there has been as good of a tactical combat

Over all, I've had similar thoughts and wonder why an inn doesn't become part of the empire when your ZoC surrounds it. Couple of things I don't get though is why are there inns in the wilderness to begine with? There are zero cities. There are no roads and I don't even see trails. Any thing not part of your Empire is full of monsters and thieves. Also, thieves and monster groups can destroy our towns willy-nilly if we don't defend them. How would a

I think most of what you suggested actually was intended, as Heavenfall mentioned. I think Brad even alluded to this in a video of his when he was speaking about designing factions.
