That would allow a much higher degree of flexibility for us insane modders out here.
I would like to strongly second thi

I am hopeful that the modding support in the game would be enough though to create a spin off tactical game that did focus on small squad fights.
There is no global storage, either. There is no storage at all in Elemental. To train a unit with plate armor, you'll need the resources, appropriate facilities (presumably) and time. No stockpiling, nothing.
Right, your blacksmiths do not produce plate mail, they just change build times. The plate mail upgrade option just adds to the cost of a unit. I assume that a unit upgrade would require just the cost differential to be p
Elemental: War of Magic, will be the first game that makes use of it but the RPG we’re starting to work on will make use of it too and there are other games in the design process that will exist on it. rpgcodex! That rules, and reminds me I should go there to read how bad they are ripping on dragon age ;) Most of you are all focused on research but I wanted to talk a bit about the basic economics section. I understand the desire to reduce the number of things a player has to worry about but it seems odd to have the natural birth rate of a population be tied into prestige. I do not have a good feeling for the range of populations and prestige yet, but if prestige does no

First a quick comment, the idea of "infinite research" is very meh to me. All it means is I get to increase some bonus along a line of rapidly diminishing returns. It is identical to "future tech" and I honestly do not see the point or appeal of it. Perhaps someone who really likes the concept could enlighten me? As far as a way to do research, as long as you talk about x-com as being an inspiration why not allow some forms of reverse engineering in your tech tree? You go on a quest o

If you have not played the Civ4 mod Fall from Heaven 2 I would highly recommend it. I think it does a great job of showing what can be done when some RPG elements are added into a strategy game. Having a unit that is more powerful than other units, that gains in power during the game, that has skill choices to make as it gains power, and is unique (you can never build a second one if it dies) is all done in FFH. At the same time you still have the same core Civ4 gameplay of settling c

First of all can we stop with all the real world talk? It does not really matter if it is somehow "reasonable" for X units of some type to kill Y units of a weaker type. This is not going to be some detailed hyper realistic simulation game. You should be focused more on what would be fun to play than what would "really" happen. One reason I have avoided commenting much at this stage in the beta is because so many core game play mechanics are not in place yet. Magic is a central aspect of the game, it is a key component of a sovereigns power, so without it in place it is very hard for me to comment on the risk/reward of allowing

In college I became very disillusioned with AI. I had all these ideas about computer learning and dynamic code and neural networks and really none of that amounted to much of anything. You basically had expert systems (bleh prolog!) that only work in very abstract controlled environments and (tree)search. When I learned that the best chess AI was nothing more than look up tables with opening/closing plays combined with just brute force game tree traversal I became saddened. To me such

Before I checked in on the forums here I clicked on the link that was placed in my start menu (http://fogbugz.stardock.com/default.asp?pg=pgPublicEdit) and submitted a few bugs using it. Should I not use that system? Also do you have any guidelines on the level of bugs you want to see? I wrote down everything I came across and started to enter them but most are only minor issues. While I love the graphics I am concerned that I will end up playing only on the cloth map. In GalCiv I would always play zoomed out becuase it was far easier to get an idea for what was going on. The individual unit graphics were just not easy enough to distinguish and some information, like planet quality, was just so much harder to see (at least for me). I assume in this shot that the blue circle under the units feet is because they are selected. If this is true I am concern

If I can play the game, then for me the game is released. As long as the company behind the game is not in finacial trouble then I would not care if it took them 1 week or 1 decade after I started playing to call the game offically released. The games I play the most are games that recive continued support over time. From MMO's, to TF2, to civ 4 mods, these games are literally never really done. They just keep adding more and more features over the years. The upside to an exte
