One of my favorite D&D characters was from way back, but it was for his ignominious death. The party was just starting out and I had them crawling through a narrow tunnel. My friend, a ranger whose name has been lost to time, was in the lead when they hear a snuffling sound coming towards them. I'm expecting that raise/lower will go through some serious balancing and tweaking, because right now it's pretty overpowered ;) Why would you ever build a navy/transports? Just build a land bridge and be done with it (I'm guessing ocean currents and their weather and food implications are not modeled). What I think I'd like to see is that shards augment the power of your spells, such as raise/lower land, allowing you to make a bigger impact. So without an earth shard, maybe y

It's so hard to tell how magic will play out right now, since magic is so, so limited. I can only hope, though, that one can't end up in the situation where they've picked an Air-aspected channeler but there's no way to actually get an Air shard due to map gen, thus locking you out of any useful spells. Or, like you, get stuck behind impassable terrain because, as a super-powerful channeler, you can't cross a mountain range ...
I've had those as well, but didn't watch the experience - I thought I was attacking a unit (spider 1) and being attacked by a different spider (spider 2). If you only get XP for the one, though, then perhaps both units initiated an attack on their turn which didn't resolve until the next turn (due to having to move first).

You know, I was playing the beta last night and something kept nagging me about the research and that's exactly what it was.
I spawned in a fairly big open area, but it turns out it was entirely locked in by mounts to the north, east and south and the ocean in the west. Unfortunately I crashed, and so don't have a picture. Debug Message: Map Random Seed: 1264554700
I'd say it's expressly intended to be limiting :) My interpretation of your concern is that you fear that there will only be one valid starting strategy - build as many cities as you can. I think Stardock's intention is for their to be multiple starting strategies that work and so spending all of your essence to build cities is only one path. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Essence costs are one of the differentiating characteristics of the faction that you choose. So may

Actually I think the problem is that the bounding box of the tabs at the top of the options page are too big. If you go to the Video tab and then try to click on "GFX: Disable Point Sprites" in the center of the checkbox, it actually clicks the Audio tab.

I'm pretty sure the single player is a story (campaign). See, for instance, this post [Edit] And I should say that, from other posts by Frogboy, the intention is to have the story w/ random events and a map that is generated each play-through. I might be wrong on the last part, but since I haven't the opportunity to do the searching right now I'll just have to go with my memory :)

Where'd you get Oct 29? Frogboy just posted today that the beta will be out before the end of summer, which should certainly be before 10/29.
The beta hasn't started just yet, once it has (which should be later this month or next month), it'll show up automatically for you to download in Impulse.
The shot you're referencing Maccilia is significantly older than the shot from brad's blog, but still I'd expect that the unit size to scale up/down based on zoom so that you can more easily select them.
I don't think the X series is MP tho...
