Have you checked all your units? Some times you have to find a unit and make it "guard" or something to end the turn. EDIT: to clarify, a unit that is not already stationed in a city. Or any bugged double wifes. Check them and make them gaurd. Or they might be in combat, sometimes if they get in combat and its an auto one that doesn't go into the auto-battle or battle screen, the game can pause if you move the camera away.

The Main story isn't a mess, I can't speak for the engine as I don't have a clue how those that works. The backstory is fine, it just needs to be fleshed out and be made a more important part of the game. The book and the campaign give it a good starting point, it just needs to come out in the game more.

Trying to simply select an enemy to attack that is next to a dragon or army on horse back is frustrating, having to change the camera around annoys the hell out of me.

I played through the game like 3 times before I even figured out I could end a building comand. I admit, I have a large knowledge of the game, not through any real insight or intelect, but simply becasue I've played for a bajillion hours. I can certainly understand someone not knowing how to do this. Everthing in this game is trial and error.

I had one enemy that had 5 gold mines on one city. I didnt have 5 in my entire 14 city empire. When I saw it, I knew I had to have that city for my own...this doesn't help the discussion very much...I'm going to say 20.
