Magical quest reward question

When I receive a magical item as a reward do I have to "use" it to get the benefit? For instance, a magical compass I received says in the description that my sight has increased +1, but it kind of makes it sound like just carrying it increases my sight. Do I have to use these items to get the results? Thanks...

I wondered that myself? There seams to be an option to 'use' the item and it dissapears, so i simply assume you do have to 'use' it to get the effect.

You have to use it like a book, it goes away and you gain +1 sight.
